If you’re not one of the almost two million people who have viewed this on YouTube, here is the famous Iceland Football Celebration.

When Halldor Orri scored a great goal he decided to go fishing and catch his mate Johann Laxdal or “Johann the salmon”. The game was Stjarnan against Fylkir in the top league in Iceland and the goal was the winning goal in extra time.

It wasn’t a particularly pretty game, but Spain has won it’s first World Cup Championship, beating the Netherlands by a score of 1 to nil.

    That’s it . . . until 2014 in Brazil.

It’s interesting to see how the actual ball used in the World Cup tournament has evolved over the years:

It’s not unusual for the the official ball to be criticized.

The Jabulani is the official match ball for the 2010 FIFA World CupThe ball, manufactured by Adidas, was developed at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom and unveiled in Cape Town, South Africa on December 4, 2009. The word “jabulani” means “celebrate” in isiZulu. A gold color version called the Jo’bulani is to be used for the World Cup Final.

The ball was also used as the match ball for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, and a special version of the ball, the Jabulani Angola, was the match ball of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. This ball was also used in the 2010 Clausura Tournament of Argentina as well as the 2010 MLS season in the USA and Canada in the league’s colors of blue and green and will be used in the 2010–11 Bundesliga and the 2010–11 Portuguese Liga in the orange color.

There has been criticisim of the new ball – it is constructed using a new design, consisting of eight (down from 14 in the last World Cup) thermally bonded, three-dimensional panels. These are spherically molded from ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). The surface of the ball is textured with grooves, a technology developed by Adidas called “Grip ‘n’ Groove” that are intended to improve the ball’s aerodynamics. The design has received considerable academic input, being developed in partnership with researchers from Loughborough University, United Kingdom.

As with the Fevernova and Teamgeist at the two previous tournaments, the ball has received pre-tournament criticism. Brazil goalkeeper Júlio César compared it to a “supermarket” ball that favored strikers and worked against goalkeepers. Other similar complaints came from Giampaolo Pazzini, Claudio Bravo, and Iker Casillas. Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon said, “it is very sad that a competition so important as the world championship will be played with such an inadequate ball.”[17] whilst Brazilian striker Luís Fabiano called the ball “supernatural,” as it unpredictably changed direction when traveling through the air.[18] Brazilian striker Robinho stated, “for sure the guy who designed this ball never played football. But there is nothing we can do; we have to play with it.” Joe Hart of England, after training with the ball for a number of days, said the “balls have been doing anything but staying in my gloves.” He did, however, describe the ball as “good fun” to use, even though it is hard work for goalkeepers to cope with. English goalkeeper David James said that, “the ball is dreadful. It’s horrible, but it’s horrible for everyone.”It was suggested the ball behaved “completely different” at altitude by England coach Fabio Capello. Denmark coach Morten Olsen, after their 1–0 friendly defeat at the hands of Australia, said, “We played with an impossible ball and we need to get used to it.” Argentina striker Lionel Messi stated, “The ball is very complicated for the goalkeepers and for us [strikers].” Argentinian coach Diego Maradona said, “We won’t see any long passes in this world cup because the ball doesn’t fly straight”.

American Clint Dempsey was more favorable. He said that, “if you just hit it solid, you can get a good knuckle on the ball… you’ve just got to pay a little bit more, you know, attention when you pass the ball sometimes.”

It was suggested by The Guardian on June 16, 2010 that the Jabulani ball may be responsible for the goal drought in the first round of the tournament. The Guardian mentioned the FIFA representative, who was queried daily for his opinion on the goal drought, as saying it was probably too early to make a definitive judgment, though it would be hard to deny that the first round was more cagey and defensively minded than usual. Owen Gibson of The Guardian suggested that a lack of confidence in how the ball would travel could be affecting the number of shots taken. Following Portugal’s 7–0 victory over North Korea in the second round of the group stage, however, Portugal’s coach Carlos Queiroz said, “We love the ball.”

In July 2010, ex-Liverpool FC footballer Craig Johnston wrote a 12-page open letter to FIFA president Sepp Blatter outlining perceived failings of the Jabulani ball. He compiled feedback from professional players criticizing the ball for poor performance and asked that it be abandoned by FIFA.

I give up on “predicting” the outcome of World Cup Games!

I’ve been out-predicted, on at least two occasions, by an octopus.  (In my defense, Wikipedia says that “Octopuses are highly intelligent, probably the most intelligent of all invertebrates”.)

The third-place match is now underway.  My prediction would be that Germany will beat Uruguay . . . so, normally, you’d have to say that Uruguay would win; however Paul the Octopus and I actually agree on this one!  Spain will win.

The big final game is tomorrow, between Spain and the Netherlands. I would predict a win by Spain . . . so, no doubt, you can be certain that the Netherlands will win.

At any rate, I’m not going to make any predictions.  However, I’m interested in your predictions.  Please participate in the poll below and tell us who you predict will win the 2010 World Cup (not who you “want” to win; but, rather, who you think will indeed win):

Who Will Win The 2010 World Cup:

    • Spain (67%, 8 Votes)
    • Netherlands (33%, 4 Votes)

    Total Voters: 12

The Germany vs. Spain Semi-Final game of the World Cup is under way.

I have predicted a win by Germany; however Paul the Octopus has predicted that Spain will win.

The first Semi-Final game of the 2010 World Cup was played, today, with the Netherlands prevailing over Uruguay, 3 goals to 2.  I predicted that the Netherlands would win, but I expected a more decisive win. The Netherlands were the better team; however, there were times when it looked like the game could have gone either way.

The victory by the Netherlands sets up the first all-European World Cup Final since the Second World War.  The Netherlands will play the winner of tomorrow’s Semi-Final between Germany and Spain for the Cup, on Sunday July 11.

The first of the Quarter-Finals, on July 3 – Germany vs. Argentina – was fascinating, because we saw a German team that played better than we’ve seen any other team play during this tournament.

Germany disposed of Argentina, with surgical German efficiency, discipline and skill.  The final score was 4 to 0.  Argentina never had a chance.  I think it’s fair to say that they were humiliated by a far superior team.

This was not the German team that we had seen thus far in the tournament . . . they were awesome . . . and, I believe, are now contenders to take the whole enchilada.

The second Quarter-Final between Paraguay and Spain was a “snoozer”, with neither team showing any brilliance on the pitch.  The game was actually an embarrassment for both teams, either of which could have put the game away – but missed penalty kicks during regulation time.  End the end, Spain squeaked by 1 to nil.

Based upon what I’ve seen, I believe that Germany should prevail over Spain, tomorrow, and go ahead to do the same against the Netherlands in the final.

However, I’ve followed the World Cup for many years now and the only thing you can say with certainty is that nothing is certain.  Anything can happen on any given day.  Spain may spark to life, tomorrow, and surprise the Germans (and everyone else).  If Spain wins, tomorrow, it’s anyone’s game in the finals.

A couple of weeks ago, who would have guessed that we’d have an all-European final?  but the European teams, particularly Germany and the Netherlands have been “sleepers”, and are peaking at just the right time . . . while the South American teams “ran out of gas” and faded fast.

I still predict that Germany will win the next two games and be crowned the World Cup Champs . . . but hang on, because things could get exciting.

    Los Suns

For an NBA basketball game on May 5, 2010, the Phoenix Suns organization decided that the players would wear uniforms that said “Los Suns”.

At the time, I simply thought that this was done in recognition of Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”, which is a celebration in the United States of Mexican-American culture and experiences.  It is only somewhat celebrated in Mexico. It commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico, which is celebrated on September 16).

    Robert Sarver

At the time, the comments of the Sun’s owner, Robert Sarver, seemed consistent with my understanding.  He said that the wearing of “Los Suns” on the team’s jerseys in  was “to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation.”

However, many felt that the team’s decision was not primarily “to honor the Latino community”, but rather to protest the passing of Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

Sarver’s subsequent comments appeared to confirm this. Sarver said frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the illegal immigration issue led to the passage of what he called “a flawed state law.”

“However intended, the result of passing the law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question,” he said, “and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”

    AZ Gov. Jan Brewer

I recently received an email suggesting that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer posted the following on Facebook, after the “Los Suns” game:

“What if the owners of the Suns discovered that hordes of people were sneaking into games without paying?

What if they had a good idea who the gate-crashers are, but the ushers and security personnel were not allowed to ask these folks to produce their ticket stubs, thus non-paying attendees couldn’t be ejected.

Furthermore, what if Suns’ ownership was expected to provide those who sneaked in with complimentary eats and drink?

And what if, on those days when a gate-crasher became ill or injured, the Suns had to provide free medical care and shelter?”

I have no idea whether or Gov. Brewer actually posted the foregoing on Facebook, or whether this was just propaganda dreamed up by supporters of the Arizona law, and I made no effort to verify the fact.

It really is irrelevant whether Gov. Brewer penned the post, or whether it even appeared on Facebook at all.  I just though it was an interesting analogy.

  • Uruguay Wins! Heartbreak for Ghana and All of Africa

I predicted a Uruguay win . . . but I didn’t anticipate such an exciting game that probably should have gone to Ghana.

The game was locked at one goal each with virtually no time left on the clock, and Ghana was awarded a penalty kick. This was the opportunity for Ghana to put the game away and move on to the Semi-Finals.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you were rooting for) Asamoah Gyan hit the top goal bar and missed the easy game-winner.

For most of the first half, Uruguay dominated; however, after half-time, Ghana came out “on fire”, controlled the ball impressively, and looked very much the better team.  However, Ghana couldn’t put it away, and Gyan’s missed penalty shot was a heart-breaker for the entire continent of Africa which had rallied behind Ghana – the last African team remaining in the tournament.

When the game was scoreless after a period of overtime, it went to penalty kicks -a horrible way to end a great game – roughly equivalent to simply tossing a coin.  There is no correlation between the team that played the best game and the team that wins on penalty kicks.

In any event, the shoot-out was exciting, and Uruguay emerged victorious.

    Here is the updated bracket:

In a somewhat related story . . . . apparently, Paris Hilton felt that the action on the field was getting more attention than she was, so she lit up a joint in the stands at the Brazil/Netherlands game, and was arrested and jailed.

I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that no charges were filed and she was released.

The 2010 World Cup has reached the Quarter Finals.

My predictions for yesterday’s games were both wrong; however, it should be noted that both games could have gone either way.  Paraguay beat Japan in a penalty kick shoot out, and Spain beat Portugal by only one late-in-the-game goal.

      Now, what?

Well, I still think that Brazil will ultimately take home the cup . . . so the rest of it is pretty much academic.

I predict that Uruguay will beat Ghana; Brazil will beat the Netherlands; Spain will beat Paraguay; and Argentina will (narrowly) beat Germany. (Consider this: Paul, a two-year-old octopus that lives in Oberhausen, Germany and who has a perfect record in predicting Germany results this tournament, has picked the Germans to defeat Argentina. With a choice between picking food from plastic containers with Argentine and German flags, Paul selected the latter first, although it did take him some 45 minutes to make his decision. Perhaps he was mulling whether the German defense could stymie Messi and company. “It took Paul a really long time to make up his mind today for the Argentina-Germany match,” Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig told Reuters. “Even after he opened the Germany container it took him a while to go in and eat the clam. That it took him so long to make up his mind suggests it’ll be a very tense match against Argentina that won’t be decided until the very end – maybe not even until penalties.”  If Germany wins, you are better off listening to a 2-year-old octopus named Paul than listening to me).

In the Semi Finals, I see Brazil beating Uruguay, of course.  The Argentina/Spain game is a tougher call.  My “gut” says that Spain should win . . . but, if I am forced to use my head (it hurts), I need take these things into consideration:

      • Argentina’s SPI is exactly the same as Spain’s.  (See my prior posts for an explanation of “SPI”).  If this were the group round, the two teams should theoretically play to a draw.  But in the knock-out rounds, someone has to win.
      • FIFA ranks Spain at Number 2; whilst Argentina is in the 7th spot on FIFA’s list.
      • Spain had no problem qualifying for the tournament; however, for Argentina, it was a struggle that came down to one “last chance” game.
      • Argentina’s star player, Lionel Messi is considered by many to be the best footballer in the game today. However, Messi’s performance in this tournament has been “underwhelming”. He has not scored a single goal in Argentina’s four wins. Will the Spain game be a “break-through” game for Messi, in which he shows the world that he truly is the best? . . . or will he continue to be something less than spectacular?
      • Argentina’s coach, Maradona (who was the best player in the world in his day) is without a doubt the most “colorful” coach in the tournament. His antics keep the press concentrated on him; taking the attention away from his players, relieving them of that stress, and allowing them to be more relaxed, somewhat isolated from the media circus.  He is also very good at motivating his players, on the pitch and in the locker room.
      • Spain won the 2008 UEFA EURO cup and may still be able to bring back some adrenaline and momentum from that big win.
      • Spain has been in the semi-finals only once before, and ended up in fourth place.  On the other hand, Argentina has been there four times – winning the Cup twice and placing second twice.
      • If Argentina wins, the final will be an “all-South American” event.  I think a South America vs. Europe final game would be a “bigger”, more exciting event (Continent vs. Continent, rather than just Country vs. Country).
      • The history of meetings between the two clubs is not helpful at all:

Each team has one 5 games. Argentina has scored only one more goal than Spain in the history of their meetings.

So . . . all I can do is flip a coin . . .  and say that Spain will win the opportunity to go on to get beaten by Brazil.
