The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, last night, with an overtime goal in game six of the best-of-seven finals, in front of a disappointed Philadelphia crowd.

I talk to many Canadians who grow more frustrated every year that the coveted Lord Stanley’s Cup goes to a non-Canadian team.

However – in my mind, at least – the Chicago Blackhawks (like every other team in the NHL) is a “Canadian” team.  Twenty-two of the thirty-six players on the roster are Canadian.  (Seven are from Europe, and seven are from th USA).

Congratulations, as well, to Jonathan Toews, the 22-year-old captain of the Blackhawks who won the Conn Smythe Trophy for most valuable player.  (What a player! . . . and what a future ahead of him at only 22!) (By the way, Toews is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada . . . So (again, in my mind) the Olympic gold Medal, the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smyth Trophy all went to Canadians.  (We’ll have to wait until the ceremony on June 23 to see who wins the leagues other awards).

I just received this from a good friend of mine who lives in Alberta.

This chart from the utility company EPCOR contrasts water consumption in Edmonton, Alberta on two different days. February 27th is charted to show a normal day.  February 28th was the day Canada won the Olympic gold medal hockey game.  As you can see, a huge percentage of their customers waited for breaks in the game to “go”.

This chart demonstrates how passionate Canadians are about hockey!

Water usage during the Olympic Gold Medal hockey game

My friend commented, “I am surprised by the spike after the third period because I thought everyone just peed themselves at 19:38 of the third period and wouldn’t have to go anymore.”

        Brian Williams

        Brian Williams

Brian Williams, the anchor of the NBC Nightly News, wrote the following on his blog, The Daily Nightly, prior to his final broadcast from the Vancouver Winter Olympics:

After tonight’s broadcast and after looting our hotel mini-bars, we’re going to try to brave the blizzard and fly east to home and hearth, and to do laundry well into next week.  Before we leave this thoroughly polite country, the polite thing to do is leave behind a thank-you note.

        Thank you, Canada:

        For being such good hosts.

        For your unfailing courtesy.

        For your (mostly) beautiful weather.

For scheduling no more than 60 percent of your float plane departures at the exact moment when I was trying to say something on television.

For not seeming to mind the occasional (or constant) good-natured mimicry of your accents.

For your unique TV commercials — for companies like Tim Hortons — which made us laugh and cry.

For securing this massive event without choking security, and without publicly displaying a single automatic weapon.

For having the best garment design and logo-wear of the games — you’ve made wearing your name a cool thing to do.

For the sportsmanship we saw most of your athletes display.

For not honking your horns. I didn’t hear one car horn in 15 days — which also means none of my fellow New Yorkers rented cars while visiting.

For making us aware of how many of you have been watching NBC all these years.

For having the good taste to have an anchorman named Brian Williams on your CTV network, who turns out to be such a nice guy.

For the body scans at the airport which make pat-downs and cavity searches unnecessary.

For designing those really cool LED Olympic rings in the harbor, which turned to gold when your athletes won one.

For always saying nice things about the United States…when you know we’re listening.

For sharing Joannie Rochette with us.

For reminding some of us we used to be a more civil society.

Mostly, for welcoming the world with such ease and making lasting friends with all of us.

Below is a video essay put together by Stephen Brunt, a Canadian sportswriter and commentator) on what the Olympics meant to Canada. (It’s introduced by the Canadian Brian Williams, the main studio host for CTV.)

It’s beautiful and moving, and, amazingly, it was done before Canada’s historic gold-medal hockey win on Sunday, the singular triumph that really brought the country together.

        What a nail-biter!

Congratulations to Team USA for putting up a heck of a fight and forcing the game to overtime.

These two teams were so evenly matched that they both deserve gold medals.

That said . . . WAY TO GO TEAM CANADA ! . . And Sidney Crosby – you are a Canadian hero!  . . . And Jerome Iginla – Crosby couldn’t have scored without your great pass!

Jeremy Roenick called this “the biggest hockey game in history”.  I don’t know about this, but I know it’s HUGE for hockey fans around the world.

The puck is about to be dropped in the Olympic gold medal hockey game between Canada and the United States.

Don Cherry predicts that Canada wins the gold by a score of 5 to 3.  I hope he’s right.

        Okay, let’s recap.

I told you that Team USA would beat Switzerland . . . but I sure didn’t think they’d have to “squeak out” the win by one goal. (I’m not counting the open-net goal).

I predicted that Canada would beat Russia . . . but I anticipated a very close game.  Canada “spanked” Russia, 7 to 3.

After that, my predictions fell apart.

        Finland beat the Czech Republic!

Slovakia beat the (former gold-medal-winner) Sweden!

These were minor surprises . . . but they don’t affect my ultimate predictions:

USA should beat Finland to move on to the final . . . and

Canada should beat Slovakia to meet Team USA . . . and

Canada will win the gold medal in a whopper of a game against the USA, on Sunday.

        I found this on MSNBC.com:

According to Urban Dictionary, ”eh” can be explained as follows:

An interjection popular in Canadian speech. According to linguists, a “politeness marker.”

Adding “eh” to a sentence can indicate the speaker’s willingness to accept dissent or to invite further discussion. Has been referred to as an “articulated question mark.”

The interpretation of “eh” as carrying meaning beyond other routine interjections (huh?) is supposed to be uniquely Canadian. “Ascertaining the comprehension, continued interest, agreement, etc., of the person or persons addressed” is how the Canadian Oxford Dictionary puts it.

“Let’s do something, eh?” — where ‘eh’ is ‘do you agree?’

“We could get a pizza, eh?” — where ‘eh’ is ‘if you would like to’

“I don’t know about that, eh?” — where ‘eh’ is ‘but perhaps I might be convinced if you explained further’

“What’s that, eh?” — where ‘eh’ is ‘I would appreciate, friend of mine, hearing your interpretation’

“The beer’s cheap here, eh?” — where ‘eh’ is ‘so what would you like to do about that’

“It’s after last call, eh?” — where ‘eh’ is ‘were you aware’

The Russia vs. Czech Republic game just started on NBC, so I have to go, eh.

        Matthew Perry

        Matthew Perry

A post or two back, I gave a partial list of comedians and comic actors who came from Canada.

Subsequently, I received an e-mail purportedly from Matthew Perry (of “Friends” fame) complaining that he was left out of the list.

I apologize Mr. Perry.  Yes, you were raised in Ottawa, Ontario . . . but you were born in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

You do, however, have dual citizenship, so you should have been included in the list.

It’s clear that your comedic talents were cultivated in Canada, so I was remiss in not including you.  I apologize.

To make up for my blunder, here is some interesting trivia concerning Mr. Perry:

        • His mother, Suzanne Morrison, was the press agent for Pierre Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, during the seventies and eighties.
        • He is the stepson of Keith Morrison, NBC newscaster.  (By the way, yours truly, Ethel the Frog, had the opportunity to meet both Keith Morrison and Pierre Trudeau as they walked down the halls of the University of Saskatchewan in about 1979 or 80).
        • Keith Morrison

          Keith Morrison

        • He asked that his name be removed from the Best Actor in a Comedy Emmy list. “Friends” co-stars had all agreed that they would only be nominated in supporting roles.
        • He is missing part of his middle finger on his right hand, this is due to an unfortunate door-shutting accident in nursery school. Ouch!
        • He used to be ranked nationally in junior tennis in Canada.  He has said in interviews that “he tried to play in the States but he wasn’t good enough”.
        • He entered a rehabilitation clinic for treatment of “an undisclosed condition”.  (I bet it was maybe psoriasis, eczema, or dyspepsia).
        • “Friends” castmate Jennifer Aniston offered to be his personal trainer after he received threats from Warner Brothers about his increasing weight problems.  (NOTE FROM BERT FEGG: Jennifer, I’m worried about my “increasing weight problems” . . . will you be my personal trainer?)
        • Has appeared in the top 30 of Forbes Top 100 of the celebrity rich.  (Matthew . . . if you could spare a few colones, I sure could use it).
        • His favorite NHL team is the Ottawa Senators.  He often attends the playoff games in Ottawa, Canada.  (I’m willing to overlook this character flaw).
        • He enjoys playing ice hockey and softball in his spare time.  (Who doesn’t?)
        • Auditioned for Chandler Bing on a Friday and started work on that Monday.
        • Was the Ottawa Loggers 10th selection in the 1996 RHI (Roller Hockey International) draft.  (This is probably the trivia fact that impresses me most about the man.  I attended many RHI games, as a fan of the Phoenix Cobras, and it was not a game for sissies).  (NOTE FROM BERT FEGG: I was a professional roller hockey player in Arizona (no joke) and was asked to play for a team in a new league (that didn’t ever get off the ground). I turned them down, as I placed some value on my life, and knew that I would end up either dead or in the hospital with multiple contusions, broken bones, and a concusion in just the first few minutes of play of the first game of the season.  It is a barbaric sport.  Even the “no contact” recreational league that I played in had it’s share of lost teeth, broken bones, and stitch-worthy wounds every game . . . but it was great fun!)
        • He is a Toronto Blue Jays Fan.  (Okay, the Ottawa Senators I can understand . . . Daniel Alfredson, et al. . . but, the Blue Jays didn’t even win half of their games last season, and were second from the basement in the American League East (ahead of only the pathetic Baltimore Oreo Cookies).  I guess if you’re Canadian, you don’t have much choice when it comes to baseball teams to root for.
        • His most famous personal quote is: “I learned to fall down early in life – I was like six – because I realized it was a way to make girls laugh.”  (I guess it doesn’t take much to make Ottawa girls laugh).
        • John Bennett Perry

          John Bennett Perry

He’s the son of John Bennett Perry, whom I’ve never heard of, but whose been on a ton of TV shows and movies (Murder She Wrote, Friends, JAG, Little House on the Prairie, Falcon Crest, L.A. Law, Coach, Fools Rush In, Independence Day, George of the Jungle, The West Wing, etc., etc.)

        • His date of birth is August 16, 1969, and his birth name is Matthew Langford Perry.
        • At the age of 15, he move to Los Angeles to live with his father (see above).
        • He was the youngest cast member of ”Friends“.
        • He is purportedly a devout follower of Feggism (this is unverified).
