The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, last night, with an overtime goal in game six of the best-of-seven finals, in front of a disappointed Philadelphia crowd.I talk to many Canadians who grow more frustrated every year that the coveted Lord Stanley’s Cup goes to a non-Canadian team.
However – in my mind, at least – the Chicago Blackhawks (like every other team in the NHL) is a “Canadian” team. Twenty-two of the thirty-six players on the roster are Canadian. (Seven are from Europe, and seven are from th USA).
Congratulations, as well, to Jonathan Toews, the 22-year-old captain of the Blackhawks who won the Conn Smythe Trophy for most valuable player. (What a player! . . . and what a future ahead of him at only 22!) (By the way, Toews is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada . . . So (again, in my mind) the Olympic gold Medal, the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smyth Trophy all went to Canadians. (We’ll have to wait until the ceremony on June 23 to see who wins the leagues other awards).

Game Five of the Stanley Cup finals is underway between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers!
The best-of-seen series is tied at two games for each team. After the first two games, it looked like the Hawks were going to have a relatively easy time with the Flyers; however, the Flyers have come back and the momentum is with Philadelphia now.
It should be a fast, hard-hitting game!

Go Montreal Canadiens!
That’s not something that you would typically hear me say (except back when I was about 6-years-old and the Canadiens were “Canada’s Team”, with players like Rocket Richard and Guy LeFleur, whom we would watch religiously every Saturday night, which was “Hockey Night in Canada”). However, since the league has expanded, my allegiance shifted to the Winnipeg Jets (now the Phoenix Coyotes) and the Calgary Flames.
Now, however, the Canadiens are Canada’s only hope to bring Lord Stanley’s Cup back to Canada, where it rightfully belongs.
(It’s somewhat ironic that the Canadiens beat last year’s Stanley Cup champs, the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are led by the best Canadian hockey player in the game today, and the Canadian hero of the Winter Olympics, Sidney Crosby).
This is what the upcoming Conference Finals looks like:
It’s also a little ironic that, if Montreal gets beat by the Philadelphia Flyers in the Conference finals, they will be beaten by three “hometown” players whom are from Quebec, such as Daniel Briere (who has been playing phenomenally in the playoffs – I’ve followed this guy since his rookie year and knew he would emerge as a star), Simon Gagne, David Laliberte, Ian Laperriere, and Kevin Marshall.
Indeed, there are only three players from the USA on the Philadelphia roster of 30 (neither of whom are from Pennsylvania). Aside from those two, and six Europeans, all of the Philadelphia players are from Canada.
If they can get by the Flyers, Montreal will have a tough time with either San Jose or Chicago . . . but we’ll cross that bridge if we get to it.

Dr. Fegg, although we don’t always agree, I can find some “common ground” in your guest post on my blog (http://www.ethelthefrog.com/?p=3252). You make some valid points . . . and I want to especially apologize for posting the less-than-flattering photo of President Obama, as well as the “illegal alien” protester photo . . . it constituted unacceptable “link baiting”. (However, Dr. Fegg, please take a look at the number of visitors that come to this blog every day . . . thousands of people seem to like what I post. At very least, I provide some “food for thought” and a bit of entertainment from time-to-time).
Anyway, here’s some of the interesting things that found their way into my in-box, today:
Now, think about this one. A 25-year-old “entrepreneur” gunned down in New Orleans. What kind of entrepreneur was this guy? . . . did he have a little drug business going on or what. Maybe, but I think the (potentially politically incorrect) answer is simpler than that: He had three sons and six daughters (remember, he was 25). That’s nine welfare recipients at $1,500 per month. Leaving aside food stamps, free healthcare, free school lunches, etc. , this entrepreneur could have been pulling down a minimum of $162,000 per year! Now, I could be way off base . . . he could be an Internet marketing entrepreneur, or have his own chain of luxury resorts . . . I don’t know, but it just struck me as a little unusual that he was called an “entrepreneur” in his obituary. . . And why was his nickname “Flair”? Maybe he liked to sniff markers . . . or maybe he just had a flair about him . . . it’s fun to speculate. (I refuse to make any comment on the names given to the deceased’s unfortunate daughters).
Okay, now you can “cleanse your palate”, before I move on, with this cute family photo:
Next, I found this on the NBC Miami Web site:
Suspicious Package: TSA Worker Jailed After Junk Joke
MIA worker assaults colleague who made crack at genitalia after walk through machine.
Perhaps the new airport body scanners are a bit too revealing.
A TSA worker in Miami was arrested for aggravated battery after police say he attacked a colleague who’d made fun of his small genitalia after he walked through one of the new high-tech security scanners during a recent training session.
Rolando Negrin, 44, was busted for assault after things got ugly at Miami International Airport between Negrin and some of his fellow Transportation Security Administration workers on Tuesday.
Sources say Negrin stepped into the machine during the training session and became embarrassed and angry when a supervisor started cracking jokes about his manhood, made visible by the new machine.
According to the police report, Negron confronted one of his co-workers in an employee parking lot, where he hit him with a police baton on the arm and back.
“[Negron] then told victim to kneel down and say ‘your sorry,’” the report reads. “Victim stated he was in fear and complied with [Negron].”
Negron was arrested the next day when he arrived for work. He told police he had been made fun of by coworkers on a daily basis.
“[Negron] stated he could not take the jokes anymore and lost his mind,” the report reads.
Negrin was arrested and booked into Miami-Dade County Jail. His arrest photo (above) shows him wearing his blue TSA shirt at the time of the arrest.
The attack may be the first piece of proof that the new scanners may be leaving too little to the imagination.
The $170,000 machines, which were introduced last year, took some heat from fliers who weren’t quite ready to show their bod to government employees.
But if this latest incident is any indication, the scanners sound like good news for anti-terrorism and bad news for less-than-average men.

Now, here’s the latest scores in the second round of the NHL playoffs:
Most note-worthy is the 7 to 1 trouncing of Detroit over San Jose (despite the fact that San Jose leads the series 3 games to 1). In tonight’s game, Johan Franzen (Detroit) scored a “natural hat trick” in the first period of the game. A “natural hat trick” is when a player scores three goals in a row, without any intervening goals by either his own or the opposing team. This doesn’t happen very often! So, if you were lucky enough to see the game tonight, you saw something equivalent to Haley’s Comet.
(Even more rare is a short-handed natural hat trick, when a player scores three goals in a row, each time while his team is short-handed – in other words, has a player in the penalty box).
On October 17, 2008, Zach Harrison of the Minnesota State University Mavericks recorded a shorthanded natural hat trick against the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Harrison scored the three consecutive short handed goals over a span of 29:54. According to the Hockey Hall of Fame, they were not sure that this feat had ever been accomplished before, and have since put Harrison’s stick on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame. However, C.J. Young of Harvard is believed to have accomplished a shorthanded natural hat trick in 1988 against Dartmouth.
On December 4, 2009, Neil Musselwhite of the State University of New York at Oswego Lakers recorded a shorthanded natural hat trick against the State University of New York at Brockport Golden Eagles. Musselwhite scored the goals over a span of just 2:59 towards the end of the second period, and the beginning of the third period. Musselwhite netted 4 total goals in the game en route to a 10-1 Oswego victory. This was the first shorthanded natural hat trick in the history of Division III Men’s ice hockey.
On April 20, 2010, Matt Calvert of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings scored a natural short handed hat trick in a span of 6:47 against the Calgary Hitmen. This feat was accomplished during game 3 of the Wheat Kings Hitmen WHL Eastern Conference final. Calgary went on to win the game 6-3.
On April 24, 2010, Scott Timmins of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires scored a natural hat trick against the Kitchener Rangers during game 6 of the OHL Western Conference final. The final score was 6-4, in favour of Windsor.
Tonight, May 6, 2010, history was made again, when Johan Franzen of the Red Wings, scored a natural hat trick against the San Jose Sharks. Get this: Franzen was, at first, thought to have scored the games first four goals, but the first goal was reviewed and credited to Todd Bertuzzi. Had Franzen actually scored a natural hat trick plus one (there isn’t even a name for it), it would have probably been a record that would never be broken in the NHL. (Franzen, did later score a fourth goal in the game; however, in the interim, goals were scored by other players – still, an unbelievable feat for Frazen).

Here’s what the new NHL Stanley Cup playoff bracket looks like:
In my dreams, I see Vancouver beating Montreal in a seven-game final series. (Don’t bet on it).
Back in the real world, I think Pittsburgh will sail through and win the cup. (Don’t bet on that, either).
It’s the NHL playoffs . . . anything can happen!

Okay, I recommend that, if you’re going to bet on anything, bet the opposite of my predictions.
Contrary to my prediction, the Montreal Canadiens sent Mr. Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals packing . . . with a score of 4 to 1.
Here are the highlights:
Now, I don’t know what to think.
Okay, so the Canadiens will play the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins will play the Philadelphia Flyers. I would pick the Penguins to beat Montreal . . . (so place your bets on the Canadiens).
The Bruins and the Flyers are a “toss of the coin” for me. I have no idea.
My gut tells me that Pittsburgh will sail through and win the Cup . . . However, my heart longs for an all-Canadian Stanley Cup playoff series between Montreal and Vancouver.
The bottom line is this: It’s the Stanley Cup Playoffs and anything can happen!

April 28th, 2010Sports
Let’s hope tonight’s series-deciding game between Montreal and Washington is better than last night’s embarrassing blow-out of the Red Wings over the Coyotes.
Whatever the outcome, tonight’s game gives us another opportunity to watch (in my opinion) hockey’s most exciting player – Alex Ovechkin.
As a Canadian, I have to root for Montreal . . . but I would sure hate to miss seeing Ovechkin play for the the rest of the playoffs. (It would be an upset for Montreal to beat top-seeded Washington; but anything can happen in a game 7).
Here’s a preview of the game from Yahoo! Sports:
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP)—Alex Ovechkin knows all about playing in a Game 7. Every NHL playoff series of the two-time MVP’s career has gone the distance.
His Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington Capitals probably weren’t even considering the possibility of dealing with another Game 7 when they took a 3-1 series lead over the eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens in the first round this year.
And yet here they are, due in large part to spectacular goaltending by Montreal’s Jaroslav Halak: The Capitals host the Canadiens on Wednesday night, with the stakes quite clear.
“One team is going to be (going on) vacation,” Ovechkin said with a smile Tuesday, “and, you know, I don’t want to think about vacation right now.”
The Capitals went 1-2 in Game 7s over the previous two seasons—all at home. This time, they’re facing a Canadiens club that won the series’ last two games as Halak stopped 90 of 92 shots.
“He bailed us out,” Canadiens forward Brian Gionta said, “and this time of year, that’s what it’s all about. You get a goalie who stands on his head for a game or two, it changes a lot of momentum in the series.”
In Montreal’s 4-1 victory at home Monday night, Halak made 53 saves, and Ovechkin was held without a goal or an assist for the second time this postseason.
All eyes will be on those two players Wednesday.
This Game 7, according to Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, is “another opportunity for (Ovechkin’s) reputation to grow. I mean, people love Alex Ovechkin stories, and if he was to rise to the occasion—and I know he will mentally; hopefully he can on the ice—then everybody will build that up probably twice as much as it should have been. And if he doesn’t succeed, they’ll build it up twice as much as it should have been in that respect, too.”
Boudreau and several of his players insisted that they are not intimidated by Halak or worried that they simply cannot score on him.
“I bet you, if you ask Alex, he still thinks he’s going to score a goal,” Boudreau said. “He thinks he’s going to score every game.”
If that truly is not an issue for the Capitals, there are several other worries for a team that led the NHL in goals and power-play percentage during the regular season:
— Washington is only 1 for 30 with a man-advantage in this series after going 0 for 6 on Monday;
— The Capitals will be without defenseman Tom Poti(notes), who was hit in the eye by a puck in Game 6 and could wind up being sidelined for two or three weeks— or longer—if the team stays in the playoffs;
— Alexander Semin(notes), second to Ovechkin on Washington’s roster with 40 goals, has taken more shots than anyone in the league this postseason but is still without a goal, and Mike Green(notes), the league’s top-scoring defenseman, also has yet to put the puck in the net;
— Montreal has won two of its three road games in this series, and also won one of two regular-season meetings at Washington.
“Without a doubt,” Canadiens coach Jacques Martin said, “the pressure is on the best team, the team that finished first in the league this year. But it’s still one game, and we’re excited to take part in this game.”
Both coaches made goalie switches in the series. Martin yanked Halak during Game 3, replacing him with Carey Price(notes), who started Game 4. But Martin went back to Halak in Game 5, and, well, that’s worked out.
“We threw everything at him,” Green said about Game 6, “and he stole the game for them.”
Boudreau pulled Jose Theodore(notes) after he allowed two goals on Montreal’s first two shots of Game 2, and has stuck with Semyon Varlamov(notes) since then. Boudreau wouldn’t reveal Tuesday who will start in Washington’s net for Game 7—he did acknowledge considering a change to Theodore during Game 6—although he seemed to indicate he’ll go with Varlamov.
Asked whether Varlamov’s play in a Game 7, second-round loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins a year ago—the Russian let in four goals on 18 shots and left in the second period—would factor into his decision, Boudreau said, “No, but his play in Game 7 against the Rangers might.”
Varlamov allowed only one goal in that series-deciding victory in last season’s first round.
Whoever is in goal for the Capitals, Ovechkin and Co. know they’ll need to fare better at the other end of the ice against Halak than they have the past two games.
“We don’t want it to be the last game … of the year,” Ovechkin said. “We want to continue.”
Let’s take a look at where things stand, as of now:
Because of the reseeding in the NHL Playoffs, the 2010 updated brackets will not be finalized until we know the outcome of the Montreal Canadiens vs. Washington Capitals tonight.
We already know that the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose, Chicago and Vancouver have moved on to the next round in the West.
In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers have advanced.
Here are the upcoming scenarios:
Western Conference – The Detroit Red Wings will play the San Jose Sharks in the second round.
Eastern Conference – If the Canadiens win tonight, they play the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins will play the Philadelphia Flyers. If the Capitals win, then they will play the Flyers and the Penguins will play the Bruins.
Here’s my prediction: The Capitals will beat the Canadiens and then go on to beat the Flyers. The Penguins will beat the Bruins, which will set up a great series between Ovechkin and the Capitals versus Sidney Crosby and his Penguins. (The two best players in the game will meet again!)
My vision of the future for the Western Conference isn’t as clear. I, of course, hope that Vancouver ultimately emerges as the Conference winner. Which ever team it is, however, they will have an extremely tough time against either Washington or Pittsburgh – One of which, I predict will win the cup.
If Pittsburgh prevails, what a year for Sidney Crosby – an Olympic Gold Medal and the Stanley Cup (and likely the playoff MVP award, as well), all in one year.
Anyway, don’t run to your bookie yet . . . If you’ve been following my posts, you’ll know that my predictions are often flawed.

From azcentral.com:History is on the side of the Detroit Red Wings, a storied organization with 11 Stanley Cup titles.
But on Tuesday night the Coyotes have a rare opportunity to make a little history of their own: advancing to the second round of the NHL playoffs for only the third time in franchise history.
Since arriving in Arizona in 1996, the Coyotes have not made it past the first round, but players are confident that their magical season will continue in Game 7 at Jobing.com Arena. They forced the deciding game with a 5-2 victory Sunday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
“We’re back against the wall again,” coach Dave Tippett said. “But we went into Detroit and won a game. Our guys are very focused, and we’ll be ready to go.”
Will Shane Doan be ready to go? The Coyotes captain, the only player remaining from their previous playoff team in 2002, has an upper-body injury, and he will be a game-time decision.
The biggest keys will be goaltending and defense – and trying to avoid penalties.
Ilya Bryzgalov turned in a stalwart performance in Game 6, setting the tone as the Coyotes killed three penalties early in the first period. Detroit rookie Jimmy Howard, like Bryzgalov, has had a roller-coaster series.
The Coyotes’ defense was stifling in Game 6. Their in-your-face style paid dividends, and there’s no reason to doubt they will attempt to reach that level of intensity.
Sunday, the Coyotes’ power play came to life with three goals. Scoring has been spread around in the series, with Wojtek Wolski’s four goals leading the way. Henrik Zetterberg has scored six for the Red Wings.
“I have the utmost confidence in our locker room,” Tippett said. “I said it before Game 6, I love the spirit of our guys and how loosely we were going into that game with our back against the wall.
“We talk about the identity of our team. The ability to overcome situations and not get rattled over anything is one of our strengths, and coming into Game 7 I don’t see why it would be any different.”
In Game 7s, the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise has a 0-4 record, losing two times each as Jets and Coyotes; in their past three they were held scoreless. The Red Wings are 12-8 in Game 7s.
The Coyotes fought all year to reach this point: home-ice advantage in a Game 7.
“As a hockey player, as an athlete, you don’t want anything more than playing in these pressure situations where it’s win or go home, and it’ll be a challenge,” forward Lee Stempniak said.
Excitement and confidence is buoying a team that few gave little chance to have a break-even season, let alone reach the playoffs.
And the players want the crowd to enjoy it as much as they do.
“Game 7s are special, they’re fun,” defenseman Derek Morris said, “and I think the fans are going to get a blast out of it.”
A look at Game 7s
• Coyotes: Winless in the four Game 7s in franchise history, two in Winnipeg and two in Phoenix, the latest in 2002 against St. Louis. They were shut out in their past three appearances. This team has 13 players with Game 7 experience: Ed Jovanovski and Mathieu Schneider (4 times), and Matthew Lombardi and Adrian Aucoin (3). G Ilya Bryzgalov appeared in one Game 7, posting a shutout for Anaheim against Calgary in 2006.
• Red Wings: Detroit makes its 21st Game 7 appearance (12-8). The Red Wings have not won a seventh game on the road since 1964, but they usually have home-ice advantage. Their past seven (4-3) have been played at home, including the last game of the 2009 Finals, a 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh. They have 21 players with Game 7 experience.
• Overall: Home teams have won 80 of the 129 Game 7s since the NHL introduced the best-of-seven format in 1939.
