If you live in the Potrero/Flamingo/Tamarindo area, you no doubt are aware of Qué Magazine. If you’re visiting, make sure you pick up a free copy, which can be found at almost every bar, restaurant, rental car office, etc., etc. The “news” articles are hilarious, as are the photos and “fake”ads (which are not likely to be mistaken for the real ads).An article, concerning a business called “Grand Opening Liquidations”, in the most recent issue of the magazine, struck me as particularly funny:
In the fall of 2009, Yuri and Sasha Karminov relocated from Moscow to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. At first the brothers struggled to find a niche in the Gold Coast market, dabbling for a time in a variety of misadventures which included restaurants, fishing charters, eco-tourism, surf shops,
and so forth. It would seem that the more they tried, the more they realized the difficulties in growing a profitable tourism dependent business. They watched their life savings slowly being flushed down the drain, until one day Yuri had an epiphany of sorts: “The one thing that seems to be in constant supply here is available spaces to rent, and people willing to sell someone else on the dream life here in paradise.”Just weeks later the two brothers opened Grand Opening Liquidations (“GOL”). “The sad truth is that business is tough, and in this area it’s tougher than a St. Petersburg meatcutter,” said Yuri. Most people will fail; unfortunately, these same people will refuse to see the writing on the wall until most, if not all, of their life savings have been dumped into a business that couldn’t help but fail. Lack of people, market share, finances, etc., all contribute to this problem. Thankfully Yuri and Sasha have found a solution!
“We help each other,” as Sasha likes to say. “It’s easy. When you decide to start a business here, we will do all the leg work; including finding you that not so ideal location, then paying too much for it. We then will begin to buy all the necessary supplies to start your not so unique idea. Once we have got everything in place, we set a date. And here is where the magic starts. Instead of wasting countless days and endless sleepless nights worrying about why your ideas isn’t working, you can go to beach, learn surf, fish, drink, party, ruin a marriage or two, and have good times. We will have a grand opening and a liquidation sale of your business at same time! This way you don’t have to loose all your money, just most of it. We expedite your life here so you can return to wherever you came from before anyone even misses you. Many of our clients still have enough money for Honda Civic and a deposit on a condo when they leave. Believe you me, taking the guess work out of your failure will save you a small, or perhaps large, fortune.”

Many of you are wondering, can it really be this easy? The answer is, yes. Currently Grand Opening Liquidations has a full schedule of “High Season” grand closures, but their staff can always get you ready for a September or October failure. These typically are less expensive because GOL can piggy back your new venture with a current client’s departure.
In the fall, Grand Opening Liquidations will be expanding into brokering bad land deals; which will include land you won’t actually own, land with no water rights, infra-structure problems, and property in high theft areas. Please don’t sit back and watch your dreams go up in smoke, when Grand Opening Liquidations can watch the smoke for you.
I encourage the good people at Qué Magazine to keep up the good work, and I encourage everyone in the area to pick up a copy of the magazine, support the advertisers therein, and buy advertising if you are a local business. (It would be a shame if Qué Magazine had to employ the services of Yuri and Sasha!)
Did you know this: There are 293 ways to make change for a dollar. . . .Now you do!

I invite you to add a comment or two to this post, letting us all know what the status is of restaurants in the Flamingo, Potrero and Brailito area.
I know that Flamingo Pizza and Subs re-opened a couple of days ago, for the high season (now with free wi-fi).
After hearing it mentioned on Radio Flamingo (96.9 FM), I checked out Pura Vitalia, which is located about 200 meters south of the turn-off to Potrero. The food was great, the service was very friendly, the real hand-squeezed lime margaritas are wonderful . . . and there is a cute playground, with a trampoline, for the kids. It’s good to see that Marie’s, Mariner Inn, Happy Snapper, Cameron Dorado, Il Forno, Maxwell’s, and the wonderful, intimate Papaya at the Conchal Hotel are all open for business.
The new el oasis (the former site of Outback Jack’s) at the Hotel Brasilito is also now open, and the “reviews” are good.I hope some of you can fill me in on the status of Mar y Sol, Angelina’s, The Shack, Marco Polo, El Castillo, El Coconut, the new Lola’s, etc., etc.
Let us know about these restaurants, as well as ones I’ve failed to mention, and please give us your reviews.

Beachnuts Theatre Company, in conjunction with Amigos de la Educación (a non-profit organization supporting quality education and scholarships for students and teachers, from kindergarten through university in the canton of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste) is presenting “Scrooge: A Christmas Carol” at the Dira Amphitheatre, November 24, 25 and 26, 2011.
Don’t expect just a retelling of the classic Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” . . . this will be an “off-beat” performance, full of humor, music and fun!
If you were lucky enough to catch any of Beachnuts’ earlier productions (“The Wizard of Oz”, “Snow White”, “Peter Pan”, etc.), you know what a treat these plays are. (I encourage you to buy your tickets as soon as possible, as the shows usually sell out).
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children and students. They are available from several sources, including Jaime Peligro Books in Tamarindo, and Cafe Mocha (in Paseo del Mar, between Huacas and Conchal).
Doors open and 6:30 and showtime is 7:00 pm, each of the three nights.
I was invited to attend a rehearsal and I can tell you that the play (which features some actors from prior productions, as well as some amazing new talent) will be a great, fun way to get the holiday season off to a start!
See you there!

The championship game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament will be played tonight between USA and Mexico. It should be an exciting game.
It’s a final most expected, has happened four times before, and will again decide bragging rights in the CONCACAF region.
Mexico vs. the United States for the Gold Cup title on Saturday is a grudge match that has become so intense it stacks up against other notable rivalries in the Americas: Argentina-Brazil, Boca-River, Chivas-America, even Red Sox-Yankees.
When the Stars & Stripes clashes against El Tri, the winner will earn a ticket to the Confederations Cup in Brazil in 2013, a year before the Word Cup.
But it’s also about pride. Their respective fans get to boast in the team’s glory. And maybe none more than Mexico fans living in the United States.
“For years now this has transformed into something very important to the Mexican people that live in the United States. It is a clásico,” Mexico manager Jose Manuel de la Torre said. “That makes for a heated atmosphere. But the final is still a soccer game featuring two strong, well coached teams that have worked hard to reach a final we will enjoy.”

Mexico has enjoyed the comfort of commonly drawing capacity crowds throughout the United States for friendlies, as well as when it plays in the Gold Cup every two years. It drew 80,108 in Dallas for its opener against El Salvador, 62,000 in Chicago against Costa Rica, 78,807 in New Jersey and 70,627 for Wednesday’s semifinals at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
The United States, which schedules matches to avoid being the “away” team at home, probably will be a visitor at the Rose Bowl.
“It sucks,” United States defender Jonathan Bornstein said. “You come into your country and you know they are going to have more fans than you are, but nonetheless, we’re going to have enough fans out there supporting us. We’re on our home turf, and so we need to be considered the home team even though we might not have all the fans.”
The United States doesn’t have home field advantage and it doesn’t always get the respect it might deserve despite dominating Mexico in the United States while being at full strength.
The United States has not lost to Mexico on American soil when at full strength in 12 matches dating back to the year 2000.
The two ties came in Houston in 2003 and 2008. Coach Bob Bradley’s team has beaten Mexico in the last three World Cup qualifiers between both teams played in the United States. All three were 2-0 victories (2001, 2005 and 2009).
The last time El Tri won on American soil against a United States carrying a complete squad was August 1999 in San Diego.
On the other hand, the United States has never beaten Mexico on Aztec soil.
Mexico is still considered the favorite to win its sixth Gold Cup title. De la Torre is unbeaten since he took over as Mexico’s coach. His team has outscored opponents 18-2 in this tournament. El Tri’s roster has a roster regarded as its best in recent history despite missing starters Guillermo Ochoa and Francisco Rodriguez.
Mexico won championships in 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, and 2009 — when it beat the Americans 5-0 in the final.
The match two years ago was an embarrassing moment for the United States. It came immediately after a runner-up finish at the Confederations Cup and using what amounted to a third-choice team.
But even without its regular first-team regulars, allowing five goals in a second-half collapse resulted in the most lopsided loss in 24 years.
The United States will be considered to be at full strength despite losing striker Jozy Altidore, who will miss the final with a hamstring strain. This is the first time these two teams face each other with practically their “A” teams since Mexico beat the United States 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in August of 2009 at Estadio Azteca.
The Americans have won the cup in 1991, 2002, 2005 and in 2007. The last was the win that sent the United States to the 2009 Confederations Cup where it finished as second behind Brazil.
Qualifying to the Confederations Cup is one of Mexico’s incentives. A loss to the United States Saturday could be considered disastrous.
“We’ll just be a second-place team,” said Mexico’s veteran defender Rafael Marquez.
This is supposed to be the squad that will change the future of Mexican soccer, the second “Golden Generation.”
El Tri has the internationally renowned players. It has Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, the Manchester United striker who has become the equivalent of a rock star in Mexico and parts of Europe.
But regardless of which players take the field, the rivalry remains the same for United States goalkeeper Tim Howard.
“It’s been the same,” Howard said about the rivalry. “It’s been the same since I was a kid watching it. It’s the same today. It’s passion. There’s a ton of respect, but yet again it borders hatred.
“But it’s passion. It’s good. I think we have very healthy respect for them and whether they want to say it or not, they have healthy respect for us and they should.”
For Costa Rica football fans, it is a sad day. Defender Dennis Marshall, who scored in Costa Rica’s Gold Cup quarterfinal loss to Honduras on Saturday, has died along with his girlfriend in an apparent car crash, the Costa Rican soccer federation confirmed on its website Thursday.
The Associated Press, quoting the Red Cross, said Marshall died Thursday when his car collided in a head-on collision with a truck in a mountainous region near the capital of San Jose. The 25-year-old member of Danish club AaB Aalborg, had returned to Costa Rica following Saturday’s loss, in which he scored in the 56th minute for “Los Ticos”, equalizing and eventually sending the match to penalties where Honduras prevailed 4-2.
The Costa Rican federation announced the death in a three-sentence statement on its website, saying it profoundly lamented the death of Marshall and his girlfriend Meylin Masis Castro.
Marshall had been a member of the Costa Rican national team since 2009 and had played in eight games over two Gold Cups.
My condolences go out to Marshall’s family, friends, teammates, and fans.

Playwright Chitra Sukhu, Director Paul Belanger, and New Age Productions are presenting the play “To My Amazement” at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, July 13 through 24, 2011, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The play presents the power of yoga that amalgamates the physical self with the conscious and reflects the human uniqueness – love and healing.
Those from the Tamarindo, Conchal, and Flamingo areas will recognize the names of the director and several of the actors from their work with Beachnuts Theatre Company. For example “To My Amazement” features Annika Almquist, who delighted audiences with her performances as Tinker Bell in “Peter Pan”, the Wicked Queen’s diminutive “secret service agent” in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and, of course, as Toto in the somewhat “off-beat” production of “The Wizard of Oz”.
Also from the Beachnuts troupe are Morgana Van Peebles and Simone Augustine. Morgana was outstanding as Snow White, and the two of them were evil and good witches, respectively, in “The Wizard of Oz”, eliciting loud “boos” and “cheers”, respectively, as they entered and exited the stage.
The cast of “To My Amazement” includes other “local” actors, including Brooklynne Belanger, Mary Augustine, Tatiana Ortiz, and Gayle Almquist. Original music for the production was provided by flautist Sara Gillis. (I learned today that either “flutist” or “flautist” are equally correct).
I must say that it is “to my amazement” that such a diverse group of people, of different ages and backgrounds, from Costa Rica, Arizona, the D.C. area, Hollywood, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and other places unknown, can somehow meet in Tamarindo, put together an outstanding play (I was invited to one of the rehearsals) and take their show on the road all the way from Costa Rica up to Canada!

There’s lots of excitement in the sports world in the next few days.
Let’s start with the CONCACAF Gold Cup™ 2011.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup™ is the biennial nations championship for North and Central America and the Caribbean, and is the confederation’s premier event. The Gold Cup evolved from a series of championships in the region dating back to 1941. It began in its current structure in 1991. At times, the CONCACAF championship also served as a qualifier for the World Cup, but since its inception, the Gold Cup has been an independent championship irrespective of other tournaments. However, once every four years, the winner of the Gold Cup serves as the region’s entrant to the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Initially an eight-team event, the Gold Cup finals have grown into a 12-nation championship with countries qualifying from the three regions of CONCACAF, North America, Central America (UNCAF) and the Caribbean (Caribbean Football Union). The tournament features the best players from the region, and between 1996- 2005 included guest teams from South America, Africa and Asia. Mexico has won the most titles, five, one more than the United States. Canada claimed the remaining crown. From a relatively modest 40,000 that witnessed the first Gold Cup final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1991, when the United States outlasted Honduras on penalties 4:3, the Gold Cup has grown to the region’s most anticipated soccer event, routinely drawing a capacity crowds.
I won’t go into all the details as to the standings, schedule, etc. You can find all that at http://www.goldcup.org/page/GoldCup/ ; however, I will say that, yesterday, Panama ended the United States’ 26-game unbeaten streak in group play, withstanding a second-half charge to upset the Americans 2-1 and assure itself of a place in the quarterfinals . . . and that a second-half penalty kick from Dwayne De Rosario gave Canada a 1-0 victory over an undermanned Guadeloupe (also on Saturday), and revived its hopes of reaching the quarterfinals.
Canada faces Panama, and the USA plays Guadalupe, on June 14.
Today sees El Salvadore playing Cuba . . . and, more importantly for Tico fans, Costa Rica plays Mexico.

Games can be watched live at CONCACAF TV.
The NBA Championship Finals resume today.

Dallas leads the series three games to two, and can win the Championship this evening . . . which I (and almost the rest of the world) would love to see. My gut tells me, however, that the Heat will win tonight to force a game seven . . . and then, who knows what might happen!
Then, tomorrow, the NHL Stanley Cup Finals resume.

The “pundits” have predicted that Vancouver will win this series in six games. I hope (for once) the pundits are right. If I could be assured 100% that the Canucks would win game seven, I wouldn’t mind having Boston win tomorrow night and the Canucks could then win the Cup before their home-town fans. However, I will be just as happy (and I’m sure all other Vancouver fans would agree) if Vancouver closes it out tomorrow night.
Finally, I have lately been wondering about the fate of my favorite (former) Canadian Football League player – Andy Fantuz.
Fantuz is one of the best Canadian-born football players in history and has been a big reason why the Saskatchewan Roughriders have been in the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup game the last couple of years. Last year, Fantuz was the CFL’s leading receiver, grabbing 87 passes for 1,380 yards and six touchdowns, which are great stats for the relatively short CFL season.
It was just a matter of time, before the NFL sat up and took notice. Fantuz, the 2010 CFL most outstanding Canadian, was invited to six NFL tryouts in the course of four dizzying weeks in December and January, hopping flights to audition for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, as well as the Chicago Bears, with whom he signed a two-year contract.Since then, of course, the NFL lockout has threatened the upcoming season. As things sit, right now, the Roughriders are without their star receiver and Fantuz has an NFL contract that might be moot unless the NFL dispute can be settled.
I’m excited to watch Fantuz play in the NFL; but, until the NFL labor dispute is resolved, it would be great if he could somehow come back and play for the Riders . . . but I suspect that that is not a possibility. What a shame, if Fantuz doesn’t play anywhere this year.
