There’s lots of excitement in the sports world in the next few days.

Let’s start with the CONCACAF Gold Cup™ 2011.
    Concacaf Gold Cup

The CONCACAF Gold Cup™ is the biennial nations championship for North and Central America and the Caribbean, and is the confederation’s premier event. The Gold Cup evolved from a series of championships in the region dating back to 1941. It began in its current structure in 1991. At times, the CONCACAF championship also served as a qualifier for the World Cup, but since its inception, the Gold Cup has been an independent championship irrespective of other tournaments. However, once every four years, the winner of the Gold Cup serves as the region’s entrant to the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Initially an eight-team event, the Gold Cup finals have grown into a 12-nation championship with countries qualifying from the three regions of CONCACAF, North America, Central America (UNCAF) and the Caribbean (Caribbean Football Union). The tournament features the best players from the region, and between 1996- 2005 included guest teams from South America, Africa and Asia. Mexico has won the most titles, five, one more than the United States. Canada claimed the remaining crown. From a relatively modest 40,000 that witnessed the first Gold Cup final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1991, when the United States outlasted Honduras on penalties 4:3, the Gold Cup has grown to the region’s most anticipated soccer event, routinely drawing a capacity crowds.

I won’t go into all the details as to the standings, schedule, etc. You can find all that at http://www.goldcup.org/page/GoldCup/ ; however, I will say that, yesterday, Panama ended the United States’ 26-game unbeaten streak in group play, withstanding a second-half charge to upset the Americans 2-1 and assure itself of a place in the quarterfinals . . . and that a second-half penalty kick from Dwayne De Rosario gave Canada a 1-0 victory over an undermanned Guadeloupe (also on Saturday), and revived its hopes of reaching the quarterfinals.

Canada faces Panama, and the USA plays Guadalupe, on June 14.

Today sees El Salvadore playing Cuba . . . and, more importantly for Tico fans, Costa Rica plays Mexico.
    Mexico vs. Costa Rica

Games can be watched live at CONCACAF TV.

The NBA Championship Finals resume today.
    Dallas Mavericks vs. Miami Heat

Dallas leads the series three games to two, and can win the Championship this evening . . . which I (and almost the rest of the world) would love to see. My gut tells me, however, that the Heat will win tonight to force a game seven . . . and then, who knows what might happen!

Then, tomorrow, the NHL Stanley Cup Finals resume.
    Vancouver Canucks vs. Boston Bruins

The “pundits” have predicted that Vancouver will win this series in six games. I hope (for once) the pundits are right. If I could be assured 100% that the Canucks would win game seven, I wouldn’t mind having Boston win tomorrow night and the Canucks could then win the Cup before their home-town fans. However, I will be just as happy (and I’m sure all other Vancouver fans would agree) if Vancouver closes it out tomorrow night.

Finally, I have lately been wondering about the fate of my favorite (former) Canadian Football League player – Andy Fantuz.

Fantuz is one of the best Canadian-born football players in history and has been a big reason why the Saskatchewan Roughriders have been in the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup game the last couple of years. Last year, Fantuz was the CFL’s leading receiver, grabbing 87 passes for 1,380 yards and six touchdowns, which are great stats for the relatively short CFL season.

Fantuz Flakes CerealIt was just a matter of time, before the NFL sat up and took notice. Fantuz, the 2010 CFL most outstanding Canadian, was invited to six NFL tryouts in the course of four dizzying weeks in December and January, hopping flights to audition for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, as well as the Chicago Bears, with whom he signed a two-year contract.

Since then, of course, the NFL lockout has threatened the upcoming season. As things sit, right now, the Roughriders are without their star receiver and Fantuz has an NFL contract that might be moot unless the NFL dispute can be settled.

I’m excited to watch Fantuz play in the NFL; but, until the NFL labor dispute is resolved, it would be great if he could somehow come back and play for the Riders . . . but I suspect that that is not a possibility. What a shame, if Fantuz doesn’t play anywhere this year.

First of all, I apologize for the “sparsity” of posts, lately. I guess I’ve just been at “a loss for words” ever since I watched that total stinker of a final NCAA basketball championship games. Both teams should be embarrassed and neither should have been awarded the trophy . . . they should have given it to the Arizona Wildcats who, with their eyes closed, could have beat either UConn or Butler in that final game!

Anyway, speaking of “words” . . . they say of course that “a picture tells 1,000 words” . . . here’s a few thousand “words” for you:

Vancouver CanucksWatch the Canucks go deep in the playoffs . . . maybe even to the Stanley Cup!

        Ah . . . So that’s how it happens.

Aside from checking out what people are “tweeting” about Costa Rica at TweetCostaRica.com, I don’t spend a lot of time with Twitter. However, as Wired magazine says, “Twitter has sparked a new form of comedy: the 140-character one-liner.” Here are some of my favorites:

I think more than one company should be allowed to sell Monopoly. (@JudahWorldChamp)

Sometimes playing catch is very similar to throwing things at a child in the backyard. (@DemetriMartin)

If someone says they’re only human, give them a second look. That sure does sound like something a robot would say. (@ladybirdj)

In American culture, men get tattoos to signify that I won’t date them. (@bubblebathos)

Just visited MySpace. Half the lights are out, bears are living in my comments section, and a homeless guy’s been pooping in my blog. (@pattonoswalt)

That cop says I should go to jail for smoking PCP in my car, but I say that copy should go to jail for being a saber-toothed tiger. (@meganamram)

Feed a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Feed a fish a man and he’ll eat for like two and half months. (@rainnwilson)

I’m afraid if the Superbowl is being broadcast into space, aliens will interpret this Black Eyed Peas performance as an act of war. (@EugeneMirman)

A super quick way to look really disturbing is to walk through the rain really slowly without trying to cover yourself at all. (@mindykaling)

‘Liking’ something on Facebook instead of commenting is like nodding at someone in an elevator instead of saying hello. (@jordanrubin)

Finding the perfect analogy is like balancing a muffin on a pencil. (@Randozzoj)

It’s possible that a college basketball team from Kansas may end up in Houston for the “Final Four” in Houston, Texas, on April 2 . . . .

But it’s a certainty that a farm house from Kansas will end up in Oz on March 31, April 1 and April 2, 2011!

On those dates, Beachnuts Theatre Company will be presenting “The Wizard of Oz” at the Tamarindo Diria Amphitheater. This is the biggest, most ambitious, most musical, most surprise-filled presentation from the theatre group yet! It is not to be missed!

A “Sell Out” is anticipated for all three performances. Don’t be disappointed. Get your tickets now!

Noticed a few new witches on the playa?

There’s a new blog in town!

WelcomeToCostaRica.info is now live and publishing some great posts. I encourage you to check it out.

WelcomeToCostaRica.infoPosts aside, even just the “Home” page is worth adding to your “favorites”, if you’re a resident of, or visitor to, Costa Rica. On one page, you’ll find the local time in Costa Rica, a map of the country, a currency converter, a language translator, and weather forecasts for San Jose, Liberia and Limon, among other things.

        The posts, this far, have:

        • featured a brief discussion of the incredible biodiversity of Costa Rica,
        • included a recipe for gallo pinto, and
        • provided a stock answer to provide to those family and friends who email or call you and say, “I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica for a week. Where do you suggest that I stay? Where should I go? What do recommend that I do?”

Today, my good friend Anita from Radio Flamingo (96.9 FM in the Flamingo, Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal area) was a “guest blogger” and shared not only Christmas wishes, but also some great “alternative” Christmas songs for you to enjoy.

(I probably shouldn’t reveal this; however, I discovered that if you right click on the song titles and then click “Save Link As . . . ” , you can download the songs to you computer to listen to when you’re offline, add to your iPod library or burn to a CD” – Whoops! did I just suggest pirating music? Forget what I said . . . and DON’T do it! I think it might be illegal!)

It was very nice of Anita to mention me in her post, today . . . and to include Bob and Doug MacKenzie’s “Twelve Days of Christmas” for me and my fellow Canadians.  I had completely forgotten about that song and about Bob and Doug’s “Great White North” LP which I (and every one of my friends) had to own (and quote from) when it was released in about 1996.  (This afternoon, I spent hours digging through boxes to find my old VHS copy of Bob and Doug’s “Strange Brew” . . . one of the stupidest, corniest . . . but funniest movies ever made).
