October 7th, 2011Entertainment, Internet, Technology

I have been a big fan of Netflix for months . . . all this price upgrade controvery is, as far as I’m concerned, a “tempest in a teapot”. The real value of Netflix is the streaming video; I don’t want to physically receive and return DVDs in the mail . . . how primative! It’s 2011! I want streaming video on demand on my iPad, computer, whatever. (If you want DVDs physically mailed to you . . . what us wrong with you?) join us in the modern world!A probem with Netflix is that it is presently unavailable in Costa Rica . . . the content is even different in other countries, such as Canada.
(Apparently, there are services that trick your system so that it looks like your Internet feed is coming from the USA, but I haven’t tried them).
Today, I was informed that Blockbuster’s catalogue of movies, tv shows, etc. was available to DishNetwork subscribers for $10 per month. There is a lot of overlap with Netfix . . . but I’m still testing to see if the service is available outside of the USA . . . specifically Costa Rica.
So far, however, I am disappointed in the fact that all movies and tv shows on Blockbuster online are full of advertisements! . . . Why am I paying $10 per month – plus being subjected to advertisements?
Thus far, I’m a big fan of Netflix’s streaming service . . . but “the jury is still out” on the Dish/Blockbuster service. Right now, I’m thinking that NetFlix is all I need . . . but I’ll report further as I’ll report in the future.

“We are all sleeping but we don’t know that till we wake up! Through poetry, vignettes and the eyes of a five-year-old we will awaken to our true selves.” – Chitra Sukhu
I caught yesterday’s performance of “To My Amazement . . . ” at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. It was wonderful!
A soothing, revitalizing, life-transforming play from the team of yoga guru (Chitra Sukhu) and director (Paul Belanger) presents the power of yoga that amalgamates the physical self with the conscious and reflects the human uniqueness – love and healing.
Recognized in the spiritual community for exemplary work for creating new dance works in a variety of yogic forms and styles, international yoga sensation, and the writer of this play, Chitra Sukhu offers a gentle, inspiring performance. She inspires people to harness the power of yoga through amalgamation of physical self with the conscious, liberating the human capacity for love, compassion and hope.
The one-hour, 13-scene play explores the world and its events through the eyes of a five-year-old girl, whose innocence is untouched by the adult world. This piece will strip away all the roles you play, and leave you inspired and rejuvenated. Discover your true self through vignettes, poetry and the personality of a child. Determine how profound an effect on the body you achieve, when your heart, mind and soul echo in unity. Accompanied by original music from flutist Sara Gillis, we invite you to embark on a journey towards spiritual existence that may just change the way you live your life -TO MY AMAZEMENT brings the message of inspiration, hope, contentment and spiritual illumination.
CHITRA SUKHU of Indian ancestry is a former Hollywood actress. Starting at age 3, she spent her formative years in ashrams learning yoga and meditation. Having experienced the firsthand benefits of yoga, she has dedicated her life to exploring the innocence of childhood through writing, teaching, and dance. She founded the organization New Age Kids, Inc. with the desire to help create a generation of well balanced, healthy and creative individuals with a sense of self. She is a presenter at key yoga conferences and conducts workshops across the globe.
PAUL BELANGER, the director, realized his passion for theatre during his youth in Winnipeg. He has been directing for the last 30 years and recently returned from Costa Rica where he directed several children’s productions. He has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and friends for being able to stimulate the hearts and minds of his audiences, while being factual to the storyline. His credits include: My Name is Alice, Adam and Eve, Someone Who Will Watch over Me and Ugly Man.
The play stars the amazing ANNIKA ALMQUIST (who has mesmerized audiences with her roles in Peter Pan, Snow White, and The Wizard of Oz), as well as MORGANA VAN PEEBLES, SIMONE AUGUSTINE, BROOKLYNNE BELANGER, GAYLE ALMQUIST, MARYANNE AUGUSTINE, TATIANA ORTIZ, CHITRA SUKHU, and PAUL BELANGER.

This past Friday evening, I had the pleasure of being a guest of The Cosmopolitan, in Las Vegas, for a concert by “The Flaming Lips”.
I was treated to an unbelievably beautiful room, as well as concert tickets . . . all complimentary (although none of the freebies were in the hotel’s expectation of a positive review by me . . . my opinions and/or reviews are not for sale . . . well, at least not for just the price of a luxury hotel room and some concert tickets).
I will say that The Cosmopolitan is an incredible hotel. It is massive and consists of two gigantic towers with a casino and various bars, restaurants, etc. between (and part way up) them. It is the most “high-tech” hotel I have ever stayed in. A large HD television screen is the control panel for pretty much everything in the room. For example, you can set the television to set the “mood” in the room, or to wake you up and automatically open your curtains for you. There is every possible audio/visual/Internet connection at the ultra-modern desk in front of the television monitor. You can plug in your portable DVD player, or your iPod/iPad and watch (or listen to) them through the monitor. Or you can plug a monitor cable from your notebook computer into the desk and the huge television becomes your computer’s monitor. There are, of course, Ethernet ports as well as Wi-Fi. The television is also your guide to the hotel and it’s various restaurants, swimming pools, night clubs, etc. You can even watch television on it!

There is beautiful artwork (both conventional and multimedia) throughout the hotel, as well as some hidden secrets that the front desk people will claim no knowledge of (such as the secret pizzeria down a hall on the one of the floors) that is not on the hotel map or the interactive guide – nor is there any sign, except for a very ordinary “No Exit” sign that is occasionally lit up).
If you plan a stay at The Cosmopolitan, bring plenty of money . . . Hamburgers are $15.00 and bottles of beer at the concert were $10.00 each. (I was missing 700 colón Imperials in Costa Rica).
The concert (which was held at the Boulevard Pool on the fourth floor overlooking the strip) itself was great . . . although the opening act (whose name I don’t remember) sucked, in my humble opinion. The female vocalist/guitar player sounded like a very bad mating of Yoko Ono with Bjork. It was simply noise, as far as I was concerned.
I had not seen The Flaming Lips live before, but from listening to their music and watching their videos and DVDs, I had a pretty good idea as to what to expect . . . and I was not disappointed.
(At about the 42 second mark of the above video, you can catch a glimpse of me, dressed in powder-blue, up in the VIP section).
There were plenty of lighting effects, confetti, streamers, giant balloons, cheerleaders, a giant inflatable animal of some sort, etc. etc.

. . . and, of course, there was the music. Although the acoustics weren’t great on an outside deck overlooking the Las Vegas strip, I still enjoyed “the Lips’” great music, especially everyone’s favorite: “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots“.
If you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas, I would certainly recommend that you look into staying at The Cosmopolitan. However, unless you’re on an expense account, you might want to walk across the street or up and down the Strip a little, for at least part of your stay, to avoid the $10 beers and very expensive restaurants.
And, if you’re not yet familiar with The Flaming Lips, I encourage you to buy or download some of their music, and see them in concert, if you can. (Here is where you can find their tour dates: http://www.flaminglips.com/tour).
If you’re a Flaming Lips “newbie”, I recommend that you start with the Yoshimi CD . . . or, better yet, the Yoshimi CD and DVD combo – the 5.1 surround sound is incredible.

Playwright Chitra Sukhu, Director Paul Belanger, and New Age Productions are presenting the play “To My Amazement” at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, July 13 through 24, 2011, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The play presents the power of yoga that amalgamates the physical self with the conscious and reflects the human uniqueness – love and healing.
Those from the Tamarindo, Conchal, and Flamingo areas will recognize the names of the director and several of the actors from their work with Beachnuts Theatre Company. For example “To My Amazement” features Annika Almquist, who delighted audiences with her performances as Tinker Bell in “Peter Pan”, the Wicked Queen’s diminutive “secret service agent” in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and, of course, as Toto in the somewhat “off-beat” production of “The Wizard of Oz”.
Also from the Beachnuts troupe are Morgana Van Peebles and Simone Augustine. Morgana was outstanding as Snow White, and the two of them were evil and good witches, respectively, in “The Wizard of Oz”, eliciting loud “boos” and “cheers”, respectively, as they entered and exited the stage.
The cast of “To My Amazement” includes other “local” actors, including Brooklynne Belanger, Mary Augustine, Tatiana Ortiz, and Gayle Almquist. Original music for the production was provided by flautist Sara Gillis. (I learned today that either “flutist” or “flautist” are equally correct).
I must say that it is “to my amazement” that such a diverse group of people, of different ages and backgrounds, from Costa Rica, Arizona, the D.C. area, Hollywood, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and other places unknown, can somehow meet in Tamarindo, put together an outstanding play (I was invited to one of the rehearsals) and take their show on the road all the way from Costa Rica up to Canada!

As you will know, if you’ve read some of my previous posts, I am a huge fan of British comedies.
I had no idea of the number of incredible British comedies that I had yet to discover . . . until I got my subscription to Netflix. A whole new world was opened up to me!
My latest obsession is “Saxondale”.
Steve Coogan stars as Tommy Saxondale, a world-travelled ex-roadie with anger-management issues and a pest control business in Stevenage.
Tommy Saxondale
Tommy lives with his girlfriend Magz, proprietress of the anarchic T-shirt shop “Smash the System”, and regularly attends anger management sessions.
Magz
Tommy regards himself as a maverick and a free-thinker and takes every opportunity to impart his wisdom to his young assistant Raymond.
Raymond
And as well as Pharaoh ants, mice and occasionally moths, Tommy has to battle with snowboarders, pigeon-loving activists . . . and people who talk about property prices.
While Tommy enjoys talking about himself, training Raymond in the mysterious and deadly art of pest control, and sharing a few life lessons, Raymond has little choice but to listen. He lives in Tommy’s spare room and gets an uncomfortably close view of Tommy and Magz’s sparky relationship.
Tommy knows his own mind and isn’t afraid to speak it. Unfortunately, those around him don’t give him quite the level of respect he feels he deserves.
Vicky, the receptionist who hands out the jobs for Tommy’s Stealth Pest Control operation, takes ‘banter’ to the next level, knowing exactly how to provoke instant frustration.
Vicky
You can get a taste of Saxondale on YouTube. (Indeed, you can watch full episodes, usually divided into two or three parts). Here is Tommy at one of his anger management sessions:
Aside from YouTube, you can watch the series on Netflix, or buy the DVDs.
I highly recommend it.

Although I am, perhaps, the greatest judge of comedy in the entire world, I don’t expect you to just take my word about such things as “Little Britain”, “Catherine Tate”, “Mitchell and Webb”, “The Ricky Gervais Show”, “Mrs. Brown’s Boys“, etc., etc.
I encourage you to go to Youtube, and take a look at some “snippets” from these shows.
Although you can find pretty much all the shows represented there, here are a few examples from “That Mitchell and Webb Look“:

Okay, no more Demetri Martin.
However, it you want to watch something even funnier than Demetri Martin . . .
Growing up in Canada, I was exposed to more British comedy that my American friends. We had Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Father Brown, Fawlty Towers, Mr. Bean, Keeping Up Appearances, Black Adder, etc., etc. More recently we’ve enjoyed Little Britain, Brilliant, The Ali G Show, The Office, and so on.
Some of you whom are not from Commonwealth countries may say, “Oh, I’ve seen Mr. Bean, Ali G., The Office, and others”. I’m sorry to say, however, that what you’ve probably seen are “dumbed down”, crappy U.S. versions, and movies that absolutely suck, and are geared towards 14-year-old American boys.
Trust me, if you want to see real BBC comedy at it’s funniest, you have to see the following recently new programmes (that’s how you spell “programs” in the UK):
- The Catherine Tate Show. This is almost as good as Little Britain, and that is a huge compliment! Episodes of this show can be seen if you have a Netflix subscription (and live in a country where you can get Netflix). If the Little Britain chaps got back together and added Catherine Tate to their show, it would be orgasmic!
- Mrs. Brown’s Boys. Hilarious! Make sure you watch the half-hour BBC version, rather than the original Irish TV/Movies. The production values, casting, makeup . . . everything is better.
- The Ricky Gervais Show. This was a podcast that was subsequently turned into an animated series. This is just three guys (Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington) sitting down and “talking”. You all know who Rick Gervais is. Stephen Merchant was co-writer and co-director of The Office, as well as other Ricky Gervais projects. (If you’re a real geek, you might know that Merchant voiced the character Wheatley in the brand-new video game Portal 2). The star of the show, however, is Pilkington who is a completely, unintentionally “mental”. Pilkington has become a big star – search Google and you’ll find almost 900 sites, including Pilkipedia, his own dedicated Wikipedia-type site.
You can watch The Ricky Gervais Show episodes on HBO GO (again, if you live in a country where you can get HBO GO.
If you can’t get (or don’t want to invest in) Netflix or HBO GO, you could try illegally downloading these shows from some site like Vuze (or any number of others); however, I certainly would not encourage that criminal behaviour (“behavior”, for those not in a Commonwealth country), particularly since it has been announced that thousands of illegal downloading “pirates” will be prosecuted in the coming months).
The other alternative is to purchase the videos at your local Best Buy (or similar), or order them from Amazon.com:
(I don’t recommend that you buy the Mrs. Brown’s videos from Amazon.com, because they are the original programs, not the better BBC series. Maybe someone in the UK could send them to you . . . you certainly don’t want to pirate them from Vuze.com or isohunt.com or some other scourge of the Internet!)
Anyway, I greatly digress . . . I would like to provide you with interesting full-length movies and documentaries, from time-to-time. Today, I offer a great documentary entitled Confessions of a Superhero. It is very interesting to see how other (strange) people live. It’s been suggested that I suffer from OCD; however, I don’t hoard a purported million dollars worth of Superman memorabilia in my crap-hole of a hovel, and then dress up like Superman every day and go down to Hollywood Blvd and stand in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, hoping to get buck or two from tourists who want their photo taken with me . . . nor do I claim to be the son of the famous late actress Sandy Dennis (which her family denies).
Enjoy Confessions of a Superhero:

Due to overwhelming demand, I will do one more post concerning Demetri Martin. However, after this, you need to get out the credit card and buy your own dvds, cds, Netflix subscriptions, or whatever. There are such things as “fair comments” and “reviews”; however, there comes a time when one crosses the line into “copyright violation” and “plagiarism” and the like.
I love Demetri Martin’s humor and I consider this to be a review of his material . . . but enough is enough. If you enjoy the excerpts I have given you, I suggest (no, I insist) that you compensate Mr. Martin by purchasing some of his “stuff”.
Okay, that said, let’s start out with a couple of quotes:
Every cloud has a silver lining. Right. Okay. And, tell me again how a silver lining helps me?
“It is better to kill someone with kindness.” Indeed, it is. May I suggest showering them with gifts, very heavy gifts.
Now a diagram:

How about a crossword puzzle:
Here are the clues:

And finally, a sort of “short story”:

Did you enjoy that? If so, buy some Demetri Martin stuff . . . you won’t regret it.

I spent another sleepless night! Having watched all of Demetri Martin’s video material the night before last, I decided to buy his book “This is a Book” for Kindle on my iPad . . . and I read the whole thing all night.
The book was very funny and I recommend it; however, if you’re a Demetri Martin “noobie”, I’d suggest that you start with his work on video (such as his Comedy Central series “Important Things”) because his comedy is better when you experience his delivery, visuals and frequent use of musical instruments.
That said, here are some “tid bits” from the book to “whet your appetite”:Time had not been kind to Gregory. And why should she have been? He had teased her from the first moment they met. “”Time”? What kind of name is that for a woman?” he had said.

You can also find some Demetri Martin clips on YouTube, such as:
