    Final Four Bracket

Well, the Arizona Wildcats almost made it . . . a missed three-pointer in the final seconds was all that kept them from advancing to the Final Four.

. . . and, in the upset of the tournament, VCU (who?) (Virginia Commonwealth University) came out of nowhere and stunned the No. 1 seeded Kansas (whom I had picked to win the whole thing!)

The Final Four bracket looks to be a pretty lop-sided affair . . . you have UConn (3) playing UK (4)  on one side (which should be a great game) and then you have two “Cinderella” hopefuls, VCU (11) and Butler (8) on the other side.

A rational person might say that the real championship is going to be played between UConn and UK, with the winner going on to crush either VCU or Butler.

However, UConn and UK could beat each other, fighting to get to the final game . . . and then . . . it’s just one game . . . anything can happen!

Unless you’re a UConn or UK fan, you have to root for the big underdog – VCU – I will be.

On Wednesday night, I took my position on the couch and turned on the Arizona vs. Duke game in the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

At half-time, Duke looked to be in control of the game . . . and it was just Arizona’s “Superstar”, Derrick Williams, who kept the game within reach.

When the lead reached 11 at 31-20 on an Irving lay-up, it looked like Duke had answers for all of Arizona’s questions.

Arizona clawed back to six, with Williams hitting a 3-pointer just before halftime. It seemed big at the time.  Certainly, it sent the Wildcats into the locker room with some momentum.

I had been excited to see this game for days that seemed an eternity . . . and then . . . at half-time . . . I made like an air-traffic controller and fell asleep on the couch!

When I woke up, the game was over and the Internet was down . . . and I had no idea what had happened . . . but I went to bed, imagining that Duke had continued on to a win.

WHOA! I turned on ESPN in the morning . . . and OMG . . . Arizona not only beat Duke, they crushed them- 93 to 77!

Derrick William’s teammates came alive and demonstrated that Arizona is not a “one-player team”.

Now, in a few minutes, Arizona will face UConn. The “pundits” are no longer dismissing Arizona; indeed, the majority are looking for the Wildcats to win this one.

I hope they’re right. This one win and Arizona is in the “Final Four”!

No matter what happens in tonight’s game, I believe that Derrick Williams is the best forward in college basketball, if not simply the best player, period.

    Derrick Williams

Williams is 6 feet 8 inches, a chiseled 241 pounds, and a certified bucking bronco in the low post.

He also shoots 60 percent on 3-pointers. He was, in fact, 5 for 6 from beyond the arc in the first half of Thursday night’s 93-77 conquest of Duke. The Wildcats trailed, 44-38, at intermission, and the only reason the plane wasn’t warming up on the runway to get them back to their Tucson campus was the fact that Williams had 25 of those 38, including a 3-point facial administered to Ryan Kelly that sent Arizona into the locker room, confidence restored!

The second half (that I slept through) was a clinic – the Wildcats outscoring Duke, 55-33, with Williams just a part of the whole with 7 more points. “But that second half might not have occurred if he had not had that first half,’’ Calhoun maintained.

Now, Mike Krzyzewski is known in the business for being exceedingly generous with the analysis of opponents, win or lose. But watching Williams send his team home made even Coach K raise his evaluation game to a very high level.

“He’s just a superb player,’’ lauded Krzyzewski. “He’s as good as anybody we’ve played, or, I should say, better than anybody we’ve played. I thought we played a little better than the score in the first half, but Williams getting 25 kept them in.’’

It’s always better to be lucky than good, and Miller was phenomenally blessed when Tim Floyd, who had recruited Williams, guard Lamont “MoMo’’ Jones, and forward Solomon Hill to Southern Cal, abruptly resigned in the wake of the O.J. Mayo mess. The three headed to Tucson instead.

Williams was a known high school commodity, but he was never considered an elite player. What we’re looking at now is the result of a lot of hard work. Since coming to Arizona, he has gained 25 pounds of muscle and has broadened his game, all while remaining a team-first guy. He says he was never motivated by any perceived ranking slights, as he was by the idea of improvement for its own sake.

“I think I made a big jump from that [2009-10] season to this season, and I plan on making that from this season to next season,’’ he said. “That’s just how I am. I just want to try to get better. As long as I keep getting better my teammates are going to keep getting better, too. A lot of my teammates feed off what I do.’’

    Krzyzewski will back that up.

“Williams gives you confidence,’’ he said. “You always know that you have that guy on the court, even when he’s not scoring, he spreads you out. There is a physicality to his game. Clean, beautiful. He’s a beautiful player.’’

ON TO THE FINAL FOUR, CATS!

Arizona faces off against Duke tonight at 9:30 Eastern Time (7:30 Costa Rica Time) in the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA basketball tourney. It should be a GREAT game!

Although all the “experts” peg Duke as the favorite . . . I’m hoping and praying that Arizona can find the spark to squeeze out a win in this game. If they can do it . . . they’ll meet either UConn or SDSU in the “Elite Eight” and . . . with a win there, move on to the “Final Four”!

I know I’m getting way ahead of myself . . . Arizona has to play its best game of the year to get by Coach K and the Blue Devils, tonight . . . but I know they have it in them.

    Go CATS!!!!!!

    Ben Wallace

    Ben Wallace

If I were seven feet tall and was being paid $20 million per year to play basketball and if that’s all I had to do – play basketball – I guarantee that I would make at least 99% of my free throws – it’s an easy 15 foot shot, with no one guarding you . . . it’s a free throw . . . it should be an automatic point!

LeBron James makes less than 78% of his free throws.  Tim Duncan makes 69%.  Shaquille O’Neal, over his career, has made a dismal 52.8% of his free throws . . . and he’s not the worst.  Can you believe that Ben Wallace averaged only 42% in the regular season and 35% in the playoffs!.  Overall, in the NBA, the average has been roughly 75% for more than 50 years.

When I played high-school basketball, we were expected to make all of our free throws.  (I’m nowhere near the 6′ 10″ to 7′ 2″ of current NBA players . . . I was listed at 5′ 7” on the “official” team stats, and I think they gave me an extra half inch or so). We weren’t allowed to leave practice until we made ten in a row.  If you missed a free throw in a game, the coach ripped you a new one!

When I was a kid, I remember seeing Meadowlark Lemon or Curley Neal or one of the other Harlem Globetrotters hit nothing but net, shooting free throws from center court!  (It may be just the way I want to remember it, but I think they could even do it blindfolded, or tossing the ball over their shoulder!).

Heck, I’ve even seen non-athlete fans knock down free throws from center court, during the half time entertainment at NBA games.  Watch this:

Now I see these big superstars of the NBA and they miss free throw after free throw!  I just don’t get it!

I think the NBA should have a “designated foul shooter” (much like Rule 6.10 for the American League of MLB).  I would definitely apply for the job.  You wouldn’t have to pay me $20 million – I be happy with one or two million).  I would practice shooting foul shots all day long, every day . . . and when I was called into the game to shoot a free throw, I’d sink every one of them . . . I promise.
