If you live in the Potrero/Flamingo/Tamarindo area, you no doubt are aware of Qué Magazine. If you’re visiting, make sure you pick up a free copy, which can be found at almost every bar, restaurant, rental car office, etc., etc. The “news” articles are hilarious, as are the photos and “fake”ads (which are not likely to be mistaken for the real ads).An article, concerning a business called “Grand Opening Liquidations”, in the most recent issue of the magazine, struck me as particularly funny:
In the fall of 2009, Yuri and Sasha Karminov relocated from Moscow to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. At first the brothers struggled to find a niche in the Gold Coast market, dabbling for a time in a variety of misadventures which included restaurants, fishing charters, eco-tourism, surf shops,
and so forth. It would seem that the more they tried, the more they realized the difficulties in growing a profitable tourism dependent business. They watched their life savings slowly being flushed down the drain, until one day Yuri had an epiphany of sorts: “The one thing that seems to be in constant supply here is available spaces to rent, and people willing to sell someone else on the dream life here in paradise.”Just weeks later the two brothers opened Grand Opening Liquidations (“GOL”). “The sad truth is that business is tough, and in this area it’s tougher than a St. Petersburg meatcutter,” said Yuri. Most people will fail; unfortunately, these same people will refuse to see the writing on the wall until most, if not all, of their life savings have been dumped into a business that couldn’t help but fail. Lack of people, market share, finances, etc., all contribute to this problem. Thankfully Yuri and Sasha have found a solution!
“We help each other,” as Sasha likes to say. “It’s easy. When you decide to start a business here, we will do all the leg work; including finding you that not so ideal location, then paying too much for it. We then will begin to buy all the necessary supplies to start your not so unique idea. Once we have got everything in place, we set a date. And here is where the magic starts. Instead of wasting countless days and endless sleepless nights worrying about why your ideas isn’t working, you can go to beach, learn surf, fish, drink, party, ruin a marriage or two, and have good times. We will have a grand opening and a liquidation sale of your business at same time! This way you don’t have to loose all your money, just most of it. We expedite your life here so you can return to wherever you came from before anyone even misses you. Many of our clients still have enough money for Honda Civic and a deposit on a condo when they leave. Believe you me, taking the guess work out of your failure will save you a small, or perhaps large, fortune.”

Many of you are wondering, can it really be this easy? The answer is, yes. Currently Grand Opening Liquidations has a full schedule of “High Season” grand closures, but their staff can always get you ready for a September or October failure. These typically are less expensive because GOL can piggy back your new venture with a current client’s departure.
In the fall, Grand Opening Liquidations will be expanding into brokering bad land deals; which will include land you won’t actually own, land with no water rights, infra-structure problems, and property in high theft areas. Please don’t sit back and watch your dreams go up in smoke, when Grand Opening Liquidations can watch the smoke for you.
I encourage the good people at Qué Magazine to keep up the good work, and I encourage everyone in the area to pick up a copy of the magazine, support the advertisers therein, and buy advertising if you are a local business. (It would be a shame if Qué Magazine had to employ the services of Yuri and Sasha!)
Did you know this: Watermelon is a vegetable. . . .Now you do!

There’s a new blog in town!
WelcomeToCostaRica.info is now live and publishing some great posts. I encourage you to check it out.
Posts aside, even just the “Home” page is worth adding to your “favorites”, if you’re a resident of, or visitor to, Costa Rica. On one page, you’ll find the local time in Costa Rica, a map of the country, a currency converter, a language translator, and weather forecasts for San Jose, Liberia and Limon, among other things. The posts, this far, have:
- featured a brief discussion of the incredible biodiversity of Costa Rica,
- included a recipe for gallo pinto, and
- provided a stock answer to provide to those family and friends who email or call you and say, “I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica for a week. Where do you suggest that I stay? Where should I go? What do recommend that I do?”
Today, my good friend Anita from Radio Flamingo (96.9 FM in the Flamingo, Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal area) was a “guest blogger” and shared not only Christmas wishes, but also some great “alternative” Christmas songs for you to enjoy.
(I probably shouldn’t reveal this; however, I discovered that if you right click on the song titles and then click “Save Link As . . . ” , you can download the songs to you computer to listen to when you’re offline, add to your iPod library or burn to a CD” – Whoops! did I just suggest pirating music? Forget what I said . . . and DON’T do it! I think it might be illegal!)
It was very nice of Anita to mention me in her post, today . . . and to include Bob and Doug MacKenzie’s “Twelve Days of Christmas” for me and my fellow Canadians. I had completely forgotten about that song and about Bob and Doug’s “Great White North” LP which I (and every one of my friends) had to own (and quote from) when it was released in about 1996. (This afternoon, I spent hours digging through boxes to find my old VHS copy of Bob and Doug’s “Strange Brew” . . . one of the stupidest, corniest . . . but funniest movies ever made).

I recently had the pleasure of dining at El Coconut Restaurant in Tamarindo. The food was excellent! Lobster is clearly the specialty of the house – I had the Seafood Soup, which was topped with a small half lobster tail. Others in our party had pasta with lobster that looked delicious.
Good news for those in the Potrero / Flamingo area . . . El Coconut is opening (has opened?) a new restaurant in the former Monte Carlo location (west of El Castillo, towards the water).
Facebook is launching (has launched?) a new feature that lets you share your location throughout the day. I think it should be called “I Want to Get Robbed” . . . or “Kidnap Me, Please”.
You may have read my praise of the book “The Septic’s Companion” in prior posts. It is subtitled “A mercifully brief guide to British culture and language” and it is very informative and hilarious.
The British have some very colorful slang . . . I particularly like their many words or phrases for “sex”, such as “how’s your father”. (Often used in the phrase “a bit of how’s your father” and generally accompanied by a knowing wink) or “get your end away”. (I think our dog’s been getting his end away with that St. Bernard down the street).
You can get a taste of the fun at author Chris Rae’s Web site, http://septicscompanion.com.
By the way, a “septic” is an American. (Hey, did you hear Bob had moved to New York and married a septic?) It comes from Cockney rhyming slang: “septic tank” / “yank,” where “yank” is in turn used in the U.K. to mean “American.” (Apparently, the Australians use the same term and have further abbreviated “septic” to “seppo.”)
Is it just me, or is the “Shit My Dad Says“ phenomenon dying an agonizing death, due to over-exposure. The original Twitter posts were hilarious. The book was just okay. The television series completely sucks. (Has it been canceled, yet.)
It’s like taking a great Saturday Night Live sketch and trying to stretch it into a full length movie . . . it inevitably sucks badly.
Here’s a couple of Costa Rica-based Web sites that you should check out. They’re slowly but surely attracting a following.Costa Rica Swap Meet is a site that lets you sell, buy, or trade anything. For large transactions (vehicles, real estate, etc.) the site features a secure escrow service.
EGF Costa Rica Community is a free social site for residents of, and visitors (or potential) visitors to Costa Rica. You can meet new people who share an interest in Costa Rica, participate in a forum or group (or form your own), start your own free blog, chat, post classified ads, post videos, photos, or music (a great way for local musicians to promote their music).
When enough people find out about the site and sign up, it should be a very informative and fun site.
It’s very interesting to see what people are “tweeting” about Costa Rica, which you can do if you visit Tweet Costa Rica.
Anita from Radio Flamingo (96.9 FM) informs me that the recent heavy rainfalls compromised some antennae equipment, which greatly decreased the range of the stations signal. She says that the problem has been located and new equipment is being installed today . . . there may be a few minutes of dead air today (October 12) while the equipment is switched out. Thereafter, however, there should be a much stronger signal for Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal, etc

October 11th, 2010Canada, Costa Rica, Current Affairs, Latin America
Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas, specifically the Bahamas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in the Americas, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain and as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay. These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century, and officially in various countries since the early 20th century.Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l’Action de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October (since 1959), is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is also celebrated in a secular manner.
On January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament proclaimed:
“ A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed … to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October. ”

Press Release Posted by Jerad Portner, CMO of Doit Group, S.A.:
With the recent press release from Air Canada stating that their subsidiary company, Air Canada Vacations, will be offering charter flights direct to Costa Rica and especially the Liberia, Guanacaste area, this makes for good news for Canadians who’ve been desiring an easy, more affordable means to travel to Costa Rica.
Over the past few years, the popularity of Costa Rica amongst Canadians has amplified substantially. Now with airlines like Air Canada adding more flights to the area, this is sure to increase even more so.
Air Canada offers a subsidiary service of charter flights called Air Canada Sun Vacations, and it is here that one of the destinations became Costa Rica. Air Canada has always flown to Costa Rica however there has never been a charter service of direct flights at exceptionally lower fares than average.
Air Canada announced that they will be offering 48 flights a week to Costa Rica including to the newly expanded and renovated, Liberia International airport in Guanacaste.
Liberia is rapidly becoming the hotspot in Costa Rica for business travelers and tourists alike. With the rise in medical tourism attention through mainstream media, the area is bracing themselves for the expected influx in foreign visitors to the region.
Clinica Biblica (JCI accredited), Costa Rica’s largest private hospital, recently announced their commitment to building their new, hi-tech hospital complex of some $40 million, in Guanacaste only a short 4 minute drive from the Liberia airport in a development project called the Sun Ranch Project. The project is already approved and is predicted to be the premium Costa Rica retirement location in the country and possibly Central America.
Also earlier this month, the tourism minister in Costa Rica, Carlos Ricardo Benavides, announced an agreement between Europe’s largest travel agency, TIU that would see direct flights from Düsseldorf Germany to the Liberia International airport via the famed Airbus. Carlos is quoted as saying, ”Costa Rica will be the first country in Central America to receive TIU flights.”
The Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia was also recently approved for an expansion project to extend the passenger processing capacity to 1500 simultaneously via the construction of a $35 million dollar terminal. It is expected that over the next few years, the Liberia International airport will become the business hub for the entire Pacific Coast of Costa Rica and in turn increasing the popularity of Guanacaste even more so than it already is.
John Scheman of the Costa Rica charity, the Doit Foundation and acclaimed Papagayo Doit Center in Guanacaste expects that with the rise in interest amongst developers and sub-developers in the area, the world will begin to open their eyes to the opportunities that Liberia has to offer. John is quoted as saying, ”We are excited at the projections for the future of the Liberia area and anticipate these numbers to continue rising.”
Currently there are large numbers of Canadians who’ve either invested or are currently considering investment opportunities in the country. Of the country’s 200,000+ expats, a large percentile of them are from Canada and this number rises annually.

I’m not a big fan (or “addict”) of Starbucks, like some people I know . . . and I’ve felt a little intimidated the one or two times I’ve been in a Starbucks, when all I want is a simple cup of coffee, but the people in front of me are confidently ordering things like a “Venti Iced White Chocolate Crème Frappuccino with whole milk and whipped creme” (760 calories – 190 of them from fat- 21 grams of fat, 550 mgs. of sodium, and 65 mg. of cholesterol . . . but not a drop of coffee or caffeine, by the way). One good thing about Starbucks is that the company buys lots of coffee beans from Costa Rica, which I assume is good for the Costa Rican economy. The home page of the Starbucks Web site contains a nice video with some shots from Costa Rica. (Look for the Imperial beer sign in the background near the end of the video).
Anyway, the point of this post is that, if you want to feel like you really know what you’re doing when you go into a Starbucks, you can impress everyone by ordering “off menu” – items that only “insiders” know about.
Here are some examples:
- Short Drink: if you’re craving just a mini pick-me-up, order a “short” version of any drink on the menu; it comes in a kid-size cup and costs less.
- Biscotti Frappuccino: buy an individual biscotto and ask your barista to blend it into any Frappuccino drink for a crunchy treat.
- Red Eye: a shot of espresso in regular drip coffee.
- Black Eye: two shots of espresso in regular drip coffee.
- Green Eye: three shots of espresso in regular drip coffee (with a side of insomnia and serious heart palpitations).
- Poor Man’s Latte: order an Iced Americano with no water and half ice, then pour in your own half-and-half at the condiments station; the result is a Breve Latte for a fraction of the cost.
- Chocolate Cream Frappuccino: a Frappuccino made with chocolate syrup and chocolate Frappuccino base.
- Cake Batter Frappuccino: a vanilla Frappuccino made with both vanilla bean and almond flavoring.
- Crunch Berry Frappuccino: a strawberry-and-cream Frappuccino with hazelnut flavoring; it tastes just like Crunch Berries cereal.
- London Fog: Earl Grey tea blended with vanilla flavoring.
- Zebra Mocha (aka Penguin Mocha): a combination white-chocolate/chocolate mocha.
- Red-Tux Mocha (aka Bleeding Penguin): a Zebra Mocha plus raspberry flavoring.
(I guess the point I want to leave you with is that I personally prefer Imperial beer over Starbucks coffee).

If this theory is valid, Costa Rica, with an abundance of beautiful, scantily clad women . . . and legalized prostitution . . . is at a very high risk for a major earthquake.
BEIRUT (AP) — A senior Iranian cleric says women who wear immodest clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes.Iran is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, and the cleric’s unusual explanation for why the earth shakes follows a prediction by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that a quake is certain to hit Tehran and that many of its 12 million inhabitants should relocate.”Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes,” Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Sedighi is Tehran’s acting Friday prayer leader.
Women in the Islamic Republic are required by law to cover from head to toe, but many, especially the young, ignore some of the more strict codes and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back that show much of the hair.”What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?” Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon Friday. ”There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam’s moral codes.”Seismologists have warned for at least two decades that it is likely the sprawling capital will be struck by a catastrophic quake in the near future. Some experts have even suggested Iran should move its capital to a less seismically active location. Tehran straddles scores of fault lines, including one more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) long, though it has not suffered a major quake since 1830.In 2003, a powerful earthquake hit the southern city of Bam, killing 31,000 people — about a quarter of that city’s population — and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.”A divine authority told me to tell the people to make a general repentance. Why? Because calamities threaten us,” Sedighi said.Referring to the violence that followed last June’s disputed presidential election, he said, ”The political earthquake that occurred was a reaction to some of the actions (that took place). And now, if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to confront such a calamity but God’s power, only God’s power. … So let’s not disappoint God.”The Iranian government and its security forces have been locked in a bloody battle with a large opposition movement that accuses Ahmadinejad of winning last year’s vote by fraud.Ahmadinejad made his quake prediction two weeks ago but said he could not give an exact date. He acknowledged that he could not order all of Tehran’s 12 million people to evacuate. ”But provisions have to be made. … At least 5 million should leave Tehran so it is less crowded,” the president said.Minister of Welfare and Social Security Sadeq Mahsooli said prayers and pleas for forgiveness were the best ”formulas to repel earthquakes.””We cannot invent a system that prevents earthquakes, but God has created this system and that is to avoid sins, to pray, to seek forgiveness, pay alms and self-sacrifice,” Mahsooli said.
