I’ve discovered a new Web site, Evaphone, that allows you to make free international telephone calls to landlines and mobile phones from your computer. There is no software to install (you don’t even have to register at the site, if you don’t want to) – just go to the site, and you can make free phone calls from any computer supporting Adobe Flash Player 9.0 or higher with broadband Internet access.
This is fantastic for travelers, or for people with family “back home”.
Although you can call to virtually any other country in the world, calls to Costa Rica (of course) are not available. However, you can call from Costa Rica to just about anywhere else. The length of your free call depends upon the country you are calling. For example, you can call to the continental USA for 42 seconds for free; however, your free call to a German land line can last only 25 seconds (10 seconds to German cell phones). (I know, this is barely enough time to say, “Hi Mom, I’m fine – send money” . . . )
For a complete list of the available destinations and free call durations, click HERE.
Oh, and you can make only two free calls per day. And, you have to watch a short advertisement, before your call is connected – a minor inconvenience.
The real attraction to Evaphone may be the fact that it also offers paid worldwide PC-to-phone calls, with no limitations or advertisements, at rates that are more than reasonable. For example, the rate to the USA is only $0.0146 per minute – about half of what Skype charges, unless you sign up for an unlimited plan from Skype – which is what I’ve done ($59 for unlimited calls to landlines and cell phones in the USA and Canada!).
To see the Evaphone rates, click HERE.
I can’t vouch for the quality of the service (although I’ve used the service and it seemed okay – not great, but okay). I see from Evaphone’s Forum that they have had some technical problems (and dissatisfied customers). Having developed new Web sites, myself, I willing to give Evaphone the benefit of the doubt and explain away the technical issues and complaints as “growing pains” that the developers have fixed or will fix.
In my opinion, your best option for free international calling, for price (free) and quality, is still Skype to Skype calling – or an unlimited plan. However, if you need to call a land line or mobile phone, Evaphone’s rates make it worth checking out.Related articles by Zemanta

Magix has released some free software applications that are a lot of fun.

These applications are “pieces” of larger applications sold by the company.
I think you’ll really enjoy fooling around with FunPix Maker.
With this free software, you can playfully transfrom photos into funny images. Give your grumpy buddies a big nose, add a beer belly to your best friend’s figure, or draw cartoon eyes on your boss’ face.
Here’s a video of some of the things you can do with this free software:
FunPix Maker is part of a larger application called MAGIX Xtreme Photo & Graphic Designer.
You can download FunPix Maker (for free) HERE.
Another fun and useful free application from MAGIX is the Slideshow Maker.
With this free software, you can easily transfrom digital vacation, family, wedding or concert photos into multimedia slideshows with effects, fades, camera movements or fitting background music. Present your slideshow on PC, in your Online Album, or directly on YouTube™!

Slideshow Maker is part of a larger application called MAGIX Xtreme PhotoStory on CD & DVD 7 Deluxe.
Download Slideshow Maker (again, for free) HERE.
Give these free applications a try . . . I think you’ll enjoy them.

I read this in the Editor’s Note (by David Mills) in the February, 2009 issue of The Howler:
My fax having bit the dust, I used the internet café in Plaza Conchal to fax a 3-page document to San José. The bill – ¢1,500!!! A dollar a page. This is extortion!
(Although I must say that a dollar per page is a bit steep, calling it extortion is maybe overstating the situation – and could amount to actionable defamation – be careful, David!)
In any event, the editorial encouraged me to share a tip with you. Did you know that you can send faxes for free to any fax number in the USA or Canada. (Sorry, David, this wouldn’t have helped you with your fax within Costa Rica).
Whenever I need to send a fax to the US or Canada (which is rarely, these days, as I usually just send an email and attach a PDF document, if necessary), I use faxZERO and send my faxes absolutely free of charge. (Indeed, I have the faxZERO Google Gadget right on my iGoogle homepage). (There’s also a Dashboard Widget available for MacOS X).You simply enter your information and the recipient’s information and then enter text in the text box or attach a file (in either DOC or PDF format). Click on “Send Free Fax Now”, and you’re done. You are limited to two free faxes per day, of no more than three pages each)
Because it’s free, there will be some advertising on the cover page, which doesn’t bother me. If you want to eliminate the advertising, or if you want to more than two faxes in a day, or if you want to send up to 15 pages, you can pay (via Paypal) a measly $1.99.
Now, all of this assumes that you have a computer with an Internet connection (which you probably do or you wouldn’t be reading this), and that you just want to fax some text that you type on the cover page, or that you have the document you’re trying to fax on your computer in either DOC or PDF format.
If you don’t have the document on your computer already, you’ll have to scan it in. Luckily, there is free scanning (and OCR) software available, such as Softi Scan to PDF with OCR (see screenshot below).
However, if you have a scanner, it probably came with software . . . and if you don’t have a scanner . . . well, I can’t help you there.
Let’s say you have a document that you want to fax and it’s saved on your computer . . . but it’s not a DOC or a PDF (perhaps its a spreadsheet or a JPG, TIFF, etc.) There are oodles of free applications that let you “print to PDF”. The software installs a printer driver on your computer . . . instead of printing to a printer, you print to a PDF file. (See deskPDF, PrimoPDF, CutePDF Writer, or PDF995 Printer Driver, just to name a few). I RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE DOWNLOAD THE CUSTOMIZED ETHEL THE FROG VERSION OF pdf24 BY CLICKING HERE: Yoga For Your Health (366).
Or . . . you could use the nifty little widget below. Simply enter the file name of the document that you want to convert in the first box and your e-mail address in the second box. Click on “Convert and Send”, and the document, converted to PDF format will show up your e-mail in box.
You did it! Your document will be now converted into a pdf-file and sent to the specified e-mail address. This will take a little time, please be patient… Convert a document to pdf Free PDF Creator (I will continue to search the Internet for a free faxing solution for Costa Rica).

Here are some more free alternatives to commercial software:
Remote Access
Do you need remote access to your computer? Do you have friends and family who want you to help fix their computers, but you live in Costa Rica and they live in Canada or Arizona or somewhere else far away. You could buy GoToMyPC for $20 per month for one PC or $30 per month for two PCs. LapLink Gold is $80. Symantec pcAnywhere is $200 for one PC. Here are some good free alternatives:
- LogMeIn can be downloaded for free from https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/, and will do the job for you.

- Ultra VNC. You can find this one at http://www.uvnc.com/
- Tight VNC. Download this from http://www.tightvnc.com/
Utilites
Symantec offers Norton SystemWorks in three different “flavors”, with prices ranging from $50 to $100. Fix-It Utilites Professional is currently marked down to $30 from $50. System Mechanic is $35 for a one-year subscription. Here are my free recommended alternatives:
- Glary Utilities. According to http://www.glaryutilities.com/, “Glary Utilities is the #1 free, powerful and all-in-one utility in the world market! It offers numerous powerful and easy-to-use system tools and utilities to fix, speed up, maintain and protect your PC”. I use this myself, and it works great!
-
Advanced System Care claims to be “[t]he best system utility in PC history”. (These utility developers seem to all think a lot of themselves”).
Anyway, this one does, indeed, work well. Download it at http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html.
Partition Managers
Symantec sells Norton Partition Magic for $70. There are a bunch of free alternatives . . . this is probably the best known:
- Partition Logic. This is a free hard disk partitioning and data management tool. It can create, delete, erase, format, defragment, resize, copy, and move partitions and modify their attributes. It can copy entire hard disks from one to another. It boots from a CD or floppy disk and runs as a standalone system, independent of your regular operating system. Partition Logic is intended to become a free alternative to such commercial programs as Partition Magic, Drive Image, and Norton Ghost. Get it at http://partitionlogic.org.uk/about/index.html.
Disk Defragmenter
A disk defragmenter is included with Windows, but it doesn’t do a particularly great job. There are also commercial products for sale (see the chart below); however:
- Smart Defrag bills itself as “The World’s Most Efficient Defragmenter” and it’s free. You can download it at http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html. Here’s an application comparison chart from Smart Defrag’s Web site:

Well, that’s enough for today. I’ll be digging up some more for you, in the near future.

As promised, due to popular demand, I am re-posting my list of free alternatives to expensive commercial software:
Office Suite
Even the Standard version of Microsoft Office retails for $400, but you can get virtually the same functionality with one of these alternatives:
- OpenOffice.org. Available at www.openoffice.org. The new version 3.0 is great.
- Lotus Symphony. Available at www.lotus.com.
- Google Docs. This one doesn’t even take up any space on your hard drive. It’s available to you anywhere there is an Internet connection (i.e., it is “Cloud Computing” – remember that term, you’re going to be hearing a lot of it in the coming months). Go to https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=writely&passive=true&nui=1&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2F&followup=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2F<mpl=homepage&rm=false
- ZOHO. Like Google Docs, Zoho is an online office suite with an amazing number of individual applications (such as a wiki, and even a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application that is free for up to 3 users). Go to www.zoho.com.
Photo Editing
You could shell out $100 for Adobe Photoshop Elements (or $700 for Photoshop CS4), or you could try one of these:
- Gimp. (GNU Image Manipulation Program). Download the latest version at www.gimp.org.
- Pixlr. This is an online application (no download required). You’ll be surprised at how similar both Gimp and Pixlr are to Photoshop! (www.pixlr.com)
- Picasa. A member of the Google family, this application can be downloaded from www.picassa.com.
- Picnik. Another Web app. Go to www.picnik.com.
Video and Audio Editing
Adobe Premiere Elements and Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 both sell for $100. (Premiere Pro CS4 is $800!). Try these:
- Jahshaka. This is probably the closest freeware to commercial applications such as Premiere Elements or Corel VideoStudio. Download it at www.jahshaka.org.
- Audacity. This is a long-time favorite feature-packed, intuitive audio editor. Get it at www.audacity.sourceforge.net).
- trakAxPC. Can be used to mix audio and video using professional techniques. (www.trakax.com)
Desktop Publishing
Microsoft Publisher is $170, Adobe InDesign is $700, and QuarkXPress is $800. The following two alternatives are free:
- Scribus Desktop Publishing. Find it at www.scribus.net.
- Serif PagePlus SE. Downloadable at www.freeserifsoftware.com.
Enjoy! . . . more to come in a future post.
