Great game!
The Riders lead by three points . . . but there’s a whole second half to go.

November 24th, 2010Canada, Internet, Sports, Technology, Travel
I have been contacted by CFL (and especially Saskatchewan Roughrider) fans in various parts of the world, asking for advice as to how to view the Grey Cup game, if they are not in Canada.
My first suggestion to these people is to try to find a Canadian pub close by (try Google, or ask around). For example, one gentleman wrote to me from Florida . . . and I would think that, with all the Canadians (especially Montreal fans) in Florida, there must be sports bars that have Canadian satellite feeds. If you’re in London, England, I would hope that the Maple Leaf at Covent Garden would have the game (although, I’m disappointed by recent reports that the Maple Leaf is losing (or has lost) it’s Canadian “identity” and has become just another London pub (which is a shame, since I have talked to Canadian World War II heroes who have great memories of celebrating the allied victory at the Maple Leaf . . . and, back then (and for years after), it was the place where Canadians congregated – I must say I’ve enjoyed a Molson beverage there myself, on occasion).
If you know of a sports bar or pub, outside of Canada, that is showing the Grey Cup game, please help out your fellow Canadians and leave a comment to this post. If you’re looking for such a pub, check back here often between now and Sunday.
My second recommendation is to find a friend in Canada who has a Slingbox hooked up to his or her cable or satellite box. Politely ask them to give you their user name and password, so that you can watch the game on your computer (iPad, or other mobile device). (I am forever grateful to my friends in Calgary (Doug and Monica) who have allowed me to be a parasite on their Slingbox feed).
As a last resort, you may have to listen to the game on a radio station that broadcasts on
the Internet. As a Rider fan, my personal favorite is CKRM 620 in Regina. Click HERE to listen. If you have an iPad, iPhone, iPad Touch, or Blackberry, I highly recommend the Rider App. You can listen to the game
live, view rosters and stats, read articles, watch Twitter tweets, etc.As an aside, I have again this year been contacted by CBC Radio (Hi, Abby!) for information about being a Rider fan and watching the Grey Cup game in Costa Rica. If you’re in Saskatchewan, tune in to “The Morning Edition” (102.5 FM in Regina, 94.1 FM in Saskatoon and 540 AM across Saskatchewan), and maybe you’ll hear about me. (The show also has a Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/#!/540am).
Abby from CBC Radio has also requested some photos of the Monkey Bar at the Flamingo Marina Resort, where I plan to be watching the Grey Cup game. The photos may be posted on the Morning Edition Web site. (Click on the graphic above).
Go Riders!

The last games of the Canadian Football League’s regular season were played this past weekend.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (in a game that meant nothing to the team’s standings but a great deal to the morale of both the team and its fans) defeated the Edmonton Eskimos (31 to 23) dashing Eskimos slim playoff hopes (and even slimmer hopes of playing for the Cup before their home-town fans).
The Riders will now host the British Columbia Lions in the Semifinals on Sunday November 14.
I predict that the Riders will beat BC and move on to a repeat of last year’s Western Playoff Final against the Calgary Stampeders in Calgary. The Riders beat the Stamps last year . . . but are the underdog, this year. However, anything can happen in a single game . . . and I’ll be rooting for the Riders, of course.
In the East, the Toronto Argonauts spanked the league-leading (and, for many, a sure-bet to repeat as Grey Cup champions) Montreal Alouetttes. The lop-sided score (30-4) was not particularly surprising, as the Alouettes rested the majority of their starters – including star quarterback Anthony Calvillo – for the entire game.
The Argonauts will now face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, also on November 14. The winner of that game will go up against the Alouettes in the Eastern Final. The Ti-Cats and the Argos have identical regular season records (9 wins and 9 losses) . . . but, between the two, I think Toronto is probably the better team. I believe the outcome of the Toronto / Hamilton game will be a moot point, however, as I think the Alouettes will easily defeat which ever of those two teams moves on.
The Grey Cup Championship Game will be played in Edmonton on Sunday, November 28.
My best-case scenario would see Saskatchewan beating BC, and Hamilton beating Toronto. (Saskatchewan won both their regular season games against Hamilton, but split their two games against Toronto).
Then, if a miracle could happen, and Hamilton could knock off Montreal . . . and if Saskatchewan could beat Calgary (again, this year), the Grey Cup Final could be played between Hamilton and Saskatchewan, with Saskatchewan emerging victorious.
Returning to reality, however, if I were forced to place my money on a bet on the Championship, I’d have to say that I see Calgary playing Montreal, with Montreal winning again. (Sorry, rabid Rider fans . . . I know that is blasphemy; however, I’m just being honest).
Make no mistake . . . my heart is with the Riders all the way, and I’ll be watching all the games at the Monkey Bar (at the Flamingo Marina Resort) on my iPad linked to a Slingbox located in Calgary . . . sitting under the big green Saskatchewan Roughrider flag, autographed (“To our fans in Costa Rica”) by the dynamic duo of quarterback Darian Durant and receiver Andy Fantuz.

November 29th, 2009Uncategorized

I can’t believe it! I’m in a state of shock! Saskatchewan had the game “in the bag” right from the “get-go” and the celebrations had begun . . . but then suddenly . . . somehow . . . with no time left on the clock, the Alouettes were within field goal range trailing the Riders by only two points.
Hooray!!! The Montreal kicker misses the field goal and the Riders win! The Riders and their fans start jumping up and down! The Grey Cup is going back to Regina!
. . . BUT WAIT . . . there’s a flag on the play.
Saskatchewan is dinged for too many players on the field! Montreal gets another shot at the field goal . . . this time from closer range. And this time the ball sails right through the posts and . . . . THE ALOUETTES WIN BY ONE POINT! . . . after trailing for the entire game and with no time left on the clock!
I don’t freakin’ believe it!
I am presently in a state of denial . . . which will be followed by a indefinite period of mourning.
Comfort and condolence comments are welcomed.

In less than an hour the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Montreal Alouettes will take the field for the 97th Grey Cup game . . . for the championship of the Canadian Football League.
I will be watching the game here in Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica, via the Internet thanks to CFL.ca (and ten US dollars). I pray that the electricity or the Internet doesn’t go down (as is not unusual) mid-game.
I was flattered to receive an e-mail from a Ms. Abby Schneider from CBC Radio‘s Morning Edition, who wanted to interview me about watching the Grey Cup game here in Costa Rica. Unfortunately, her e-mail was sent this morning, and I spent the entire day at the beach and just received her e-mail about 15 minutes ago . . . so I suspect that it might be a little late for a Morning Edition interview. (I hope that she mentioned (or will mention) my blog on the radio . . . I’d welcome the publicity!).
Anyway, it’s almost game time . . . so I’d better go get my Rider jersey on and walk over to the Monkey Bar at the Flamingo Beach Resort (where I hope some other Rider fans will be congregating). I’m going to sit underneath the Durant and Fantuz autographed Roughrider flag that says, “To all our Costa Rican fans . . . ” and cheer like a wild woman, watching the game on the small screen of my notebook computer.
Go Riders!

The Grey Cup game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Montreal Alouettes will be played tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. ET.As I cannot find a sports bar anywhere in this part of Costa Rica that will be picking up the game on television, I plan on watching on my computer at http://cfl-intl.insinc.com ($9.95 USD).
I think you know who I’ll be cheering for.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are going to the Grey Cup next Sunday!!!

Saskatchewan beat Calgary by a score of 27 to 17 to win the CFL Western Division Championship and earn the right to play the Montreal Alouettes for the Grey Cup. The game is being played in Calgary on Sunday, November 29, 2009.
Montreal is going to be tough to beat . . . but anything can happen when it comes down to one game.

Now that the Ticos have (unsuccessfully) finished their nail-biting run for a World Cup qualifying spot, it is time for sports fans in Costa Rica (especially Canadian ex-pats and visitors) to turn their attention to the Great White North.

Nunavut?
The Canadian Football League (“CFL”) division finals are being played tomorrow, Sunday November 22, 2009 . . . to determine who goes on to the 97th Grey Cup game, which will be held in Calgary, Alberta, on Sunday, November 29, 2009.

I’m hoping that the Monkey Bar at the Flamingo Marina Resort will be able to pick up the game with their satellite dishes. The games will be played at noon and 3:30 p.m., Costa Rica time.
The next time you go to the Monkey Bar, look for the big Saskatchewan Roughrider flag hanging from the ceiling – autographed by quarterback Darian Durant and slotback Andy Fantuz – my two favorite players.
Go Roughriders!

Let’s hope the Riders can go all the way and bring the Cup back to Regina!

Andy Fantuz #83 of the Saskatchewan Roughriders hoists the trophy amongst champagne in celebration of a victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during the 95th Grey Cup on November 25, 2007 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
