  • Phoenix Coyotes Could Make History Tonight!

    From azcentral.com:

History is on the side of the Detroit Red Wings, a storied organization with 11 Stanley Cup titles.

But on Tuesday night the Coyotes have a rare opportunity to make a little history of their own: advancing to the second round of the NHL playoffs for only the third time in franchise history.

Since arriving in Arizona in 1996, the Coyotes have not made it past the first round, but players are confident that their magical season will continue in Game 7 at Jobing.com Arena. They forced the deciding game with a 5-2 victory Sunday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

“We’re back against the wall again,” coach Dave Tippett said. “But we went into Detroit and won a game. Our guys are very focused, and we’ll be ready to go.”

Will Shane Doan be ready to go? The Coyotes captain, the only player remaining from their previous playoff team in 2002, has an upper-body injury, and he will be a game-time decision.

The biggest keys will be goaltending and defense – and trying to avoid penalties.

Ilya Bryzgalov turned in a stalwart performance in Game 6, setting the tone as the Coyotes killed three penalties early in the first period. Detroit rookie Jimmy Howard, like Bryzgalov, has had a roller-coaster series.

The Coyotes’ defense was stifling in Game 6. Their in-your-face style paid dividends, and there’s no reason to doubt they will attempt to reach that level of intensity.

Sunday, the Coyotes’ power play came to life with three goals. Scoring has been spread around in the series, with Wojtek Wolski’s four goals leading the way. Henrik Zetterberg has scored six for the Red Wings.

“I have the utmost confidence in our locker room,” Tippett said. “I said it before Game 6, I love the spirit of our guys and how loosely we were going into that game with our back against the wall.

“We talk about the identity of our team. The ability to overcome situations and not get rattled over anything is one of our strengths, and coming into Game 7 I don’t see why it would be any different.”

In Game 7s, the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise has a 0-4 record, losing two times each as Jets and Coyotes; in their past three they were held scoreless. The Red Wings are 12-8 in Game 7s.

The Coyotes fought all year to reach this point: home-ice advantage in a Game 7.

“As a hockey player, as an athlete, you don’t want anything more than playing in these pressure situations where it’s win or go home, and it’ll be a challenge,” forward Lee Stempniak said.

Excitement and confidence is buoying a team that few gave little chance to have a break-even season, let alone reach the playoffs.

And the players want the crowd to enjoy it as much as they do.

“Game 7s are special, they’re fun,” defenseman Derek Morris said, “and I think the fans are going to get a blast out of it.”

    A look at Game 7s

    • Coyotes: Winless in the four Game 7s in franchise history, two in Winnipeg and two in Phoenix, the latest in 2002 against St. Louis. They were shut out in their past three appearances. This team has 13 players with Game 7 experience: Ed Jovanovski and Mathieu Schneider (4 times), and Matthew Lombardi and Adrian Aucoin (3). G Ilya Bryzgalov appeared in one Game 7, posting a shutout for Anaheim against Calgary in 2006.

    • Red Wings: Detroit makes its 21st Game 7 appearance (12-8). The Red Wings have not won a seventh game on the road since 1964, but they usually have home-ice advantage. Their past seven (4-3) have been played at home, including the last game of the 2009 Finals, a 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh. They have 21 players with Game 7 experience.

    • Overall: Home teams have won 80 of the 129 Game 7s since the NHL introduced the best-of-seven format in 1939.

A few days ago, I posted a poll asking interested readers what they thought should happen to the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL.  (The poll is still open at http://www.ethelthefrog.com/?p=1115 - If you haven’t yet voted, I invite you to do so).

Of those responding to the poll, 40% say that the Coyotes should never have left Winnipeg, Manitoba.  29% would like the Coyotes to stay in Glendale, Arizona, and 26% believe that the Coyotes should move to Ontario, Canada.  (The remaining 5% don’t know or don’t care).

coyotesThe bankruptcy court fight over the Phoenix Coyotes continues.  Here’s the latest e-mail I received from Jim Balsillie:

    Dear Hockey Fans,

I am writing to thank you again for your support and update you on the latest in our “full speed ahead” drive to bring a seventh NHL franchise to Canada.

Yesterday, Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes filed documents in court confirming his receipt of our offer to purchase the team for US$212.5 million, that the offer expires June 30, 2009 and that it is conditional upon moving the team to southern Ontario.  We learned that the court has moved up its date to hear arguments on the question of relocation to June 9th and Judge Baum has said he will rule on this issue shortly after.  If he rules the team can be relocated, the Judge has also indicated he will move the date of the auction we have asked for up to June 22nd.

We have maintained from the beginning that we need to be in control of the team by then to know if we can move it this year, or if we have to keep it in Glendale for another year and then move it to its new home, Copps Coliseum, where we have secured the rights to a long-term lease.

We are moving ahead.  In the days ahead, I will have more exciting details to share with you about bringing this team to Canada.

In the meantime, we need our voices to be heard. Currently, we have over 130,000 people signed up www.makeitseven.ca and we need to reach out to hockey lovers throughout Canada and the world to expand our movement.  If each of you were able to get one friend to sign up, we could mobilize over a quarter of a million people in an online movement.

    Jim

azAs many of you know, I am presently stuck in Arizona, taking care of some personal business and suffering from allergies and heat exhaustion.

However, I’ve had the opportunity to catch up with what’s going in Phoenix professional sports.

It’s a mixed bag of mostly bad news:

    • The 39-year-old wife of Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Scott Shoeneweis was found dead by the couple’s 14-year-old daughter in the master bedroom of their Fountain Hills home on Wednesday.  The cause of death is not determined, but there are no signs of foul play.
    • The 37-year-old wife of Phil Mickelson (a former Arizona State University golf star, three-time major champion with 36 PGA Tour victorys) has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is about to undergo major surgery and other treatment.  Michelson has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the PGA Tour.
    • The Diamondbacks, after splitting a double-header yesterday with the Florida Marlins, are in fourth place in the National League West, with 17 wins and 24 losses.
    • Another possible buyer for the Phoenix Coyotes has surfaced – one that would keep the team in Glendale.  phoenix-coyotesApparently, Las Vegas businessman John Breslow (who presently owns 3% of the Coyotes) has formed a group interested in submitting a bid for the team.  (There are unconfirmed reports that the group includes Coyotes coach, Wayne Gretzky).  The Breslow interest is separate from another potential purchasing group headed by Jerry Reinsdorf, owner of baseball’s Chicago White Sox and the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.  As I reported in an earlier post, BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie has offered $212.5 million to buy the Coyotes; however, his offer is contingent on moving the team to southern Ontario in Canada – a move which, apparently, is not supported by the league and which would cause significant financial hardship for the City of Glendale which has a huge stake in Jobing.com Arena, a state-of-the-art facility that opened in December 2003. (I’d like to form a group to bring the team to Costa Rica – I just need to find some investors willing to put up something north of $213 million . . . I just know there’d be a lot of interest in NHL hockey in San Jose! But then, I was convinced that what’s his name would beat the other guy on American Idol last night!)
    • Phoenix Suns point guard, Steve Nash, will earn $13,125.00 next season . . . and many people believe that he isSteve Nash underpaid, considering the fact that he is the star and the “face” of the Suns (and considering the fact that three teammates will make more money than him, next year:  Shaquille O’Neil ($20 Million), Amaré Soudemire ($16.4 million) and Jason Richardson ($13.3 million).  As I understand it, after playing out the next season, Nash can accept a two-year optional extension with the Suns, which would give him a paltry 10.5% raise to $14.5 million . . . or he can pass on the option and enter free agency.  What to do, what to do?  (I wish I had Nash’s problems).  If he passes on the option, he will be a 36-year-old point guard entering a free market with teams that usually invest long term in young players when they have rare salary-cap space.  However, if Nash has another outstanding season next year, a team such as Toronto or New York (which will have cap space), or another team looking to make a championship run, might be interested in paying top dollar for the instant respect that Nash could bring to the team.  The Suns, of course, want to keep Nash . . . and Nash has indicated that he would like to stay in Phoenix.  I expect the team to look to get rid of a high-salary player (such as O’Neil) in order to make room for a generous extension offer to Nash . . . but what do I know?  (As I said, I was convinced that what’s his name would beat the other guy on American Idol last night!  What’s up with that!)

I hate to see the Coyotes leave Phoenix . . . but, then again, it’s too bad they had to leave Winnipeg in the first place, and I’d like to see another Canadian hockey team.

There’s going to be a legal battle . . . but if you support moving the Coyotes to Canada, visit http://www.makeitseven.ca

It’s an exciting time for professional hockey in Southern Ontario and it has nothing to do with the playoffs. Jim Balsillie has made an offer to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes and relocate them to Southern Ontario. Jim stated, “I am excited to move closer to bringing an NHL franchise to what I believe is one of the best un-served hockey markets in the world”. Read the full release statement here.

Apparently, the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team filed a bankruptcy petition today.  It’s a sad day for Phoenix hockey fans, as bankruptcy means that the team will most certainly be moving to another city.  (From what I can tell, the only thing holding the Coyotes back from a sale to another city was the team’s contract with the City of Glendale/Jobbing.com Arena, which contract they should be able to get out of by the bankruptcy filing).

National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement:

“We have just become aware of today’s Bankruptcy Court filing purportedly made on behalf of the Phoenix Coyotes. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the petition, including the propriety of its filing. We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club’s constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League’s 29 other Member Clubs.”

Perhaps the saddest thing about this mess is the damage done to the reputation of “The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky.  (Wayne Gretzky is the Michael Jordan, or the Tiger Woods, of hockey.  He is a great Canadian hero . . . Wayne Gretzky is to Canada as Bob Marley is to Jamaica, or as Sammy Sosa is to the Dominican Republic.  I guarantee you that more Canadians know who Wayne Gretzky is than know who the Prime Minister of their own country is. Gretzky was probably the greatest hockey player ever, although some would argue that it might be a tie with Gordie Howe . . . and a healthy Mario Lemieux would have ranked right up there with those two).

Gretzky was given part ownership in the Coyotes and served as the team’s head coach.  Despite an abundance of talent over the years, the team was never able to live up to its potential.
