My favorite football team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, have had a tough first half of the current season. They have won only one of eight games.
Some major personnel changes were needed, and have been made (including the sacking of the head coach).
The team had this weekend off, and I’m confident that when they again hit the field (on September 4th) they will again be the winning Riders that we know and love.
In the meantime, I am presently visiting the city of Calgary – the home of the Riders arch rivals, the Stampeders. As you might imagine, the Stampeder fans are coming up with plenty of Roughrider jokes.
For example:
A seven year old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama this morning
when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of the
boy. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge
awarded custody to his aunt.The boy confirmed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and
refused to live there. When the judge suggested that he live with his
grandparents the boy cried out that they beat him more than anyone. The
judge dramatically allowed the boy to choose who should have custody of
him.Custody was granted to the Saskatchewan Roughriders this morning as the
boy firmly believes that they are not capable of beating anyone.What’s the difference between the SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS and the
Taliban?

Well, the Riders put up a good fight . . . but lost to the Alouettes for the second time in two years.
Congratulations Alouettes . . . you played a great game.
Saskatchewan is called “Next Year Country” for a reason . . . the people are forever optimistic . . . if the wheat crop is bad this year, it will be better “next year” . . . if the winter is particularly wicked, it will be better “next year” . . . if the Riders lost this year, they’ll come back “next year”.
We Rider fans are proud of our team, win or lose.
EDMONTON — It was a familiar, sombre scene in the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ dressing room after Sunday’s Grey Cup.
For the second straight year, the Roughriders lost the CFL’s championship game to Montreal by a narrow margin, falling 21-18 to the Alouettes.
And once again, players were shaking their heads or staring off into space while the Alouettes were celebrating another title, but in Commonwealth Stadium this time.
“Two years in a row we’ve fallen short,” Roughrider quarterback Darian Durant said. “We’ve got to figure out as a team what do we need to do as a team to get over the hump.”
The Roughriders ran onto the field to celebrate last year at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium when Als kicker Damon Duval missed from 44 yards. But Saskatchewan was called for too many men on that play and Duval was good on his second try from 33 yards for a 28-27 victory.
Saskatchewan’s offence sputtered Sunday, managing five first downs to Montreal’s 10 and 305 total yards to the Als’ 452. Roughrider receiver Andy Fantuz said his club was too conservative on offence.
“We definitely left some plays out there,” said the CFL’s leading receiver.
The Roughriders still had a slim chance at a winning touchdown, but a better chance at a field goal to tie it late in the game after a Duval miss gave them life. But Durant, under pressure at the 37-yard line, tried to throw the ball out of bounds and was intercepted by Montreal’s Billy Parker with 56 seconds remaining.
“I was just trying to get rid of the ball and not take a sack and put us in a long yardage situation,” Durant explained. “I was really trying to throw it out of bounds. I didn’t see anyone over there out of my peripheral vision.”
Defensive lineman Keith Shologan was named the game’s top Canadian for two sacks on Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo. Linebacker Jerrell Freeman also played well with a sack and 10 tackles.
Saskatchewan, which finished second in the West Division with a 10-8 record this season, is 3-15 in Grey Cups. The Roughriders last won the CFL championship in 2007.

I have been contacted by CFL (and especially Saskatchewan Roughrider) fans in various parts of the world, asking for advice as to how to view the Grey Cup game, if they are not in Canada.
My first suggestion to these people is to try to find a Canadian pub close by (try Google, or ask around). For example, one gentleman wrote to me from Florida . . . and I would think that, with all the Canadians (especially Montreal fans) in Florida, there must be sports bars that have Canadian satellite feeds. If you’re in London, England, I would hope that the Maple Leaf at Covent Garden would have the game (although, I’m disappointed by recent reports that the Maple Leaf is losing (or has lost) it’s Canadian “identity” and has become just another London pub (which is a shame, since I have talked to Canadian World War II heroes who have great memories of celebrating the allied victory at the Maple Leaf . . . and, back then (and for years after), it was the place where Canadians congregated – I must say I’ve enjoyed a Molson beverage there myself, on occasion).
If you know of a sports bar or pub, outside of Canada, that is showing the Grey Cup game, please help out your fellow Canadians and leave a comment to this post. If you’re looking for such a pub, check back here often between now and Sunday.
My second recommendation is to find a friend in Canada who has a Slingbox hooked up to his or her cable or satellite box. Politely ask them to give you their user name and password, so that you can watch the game on your computer (iPad, or other mobile device). (I am forever grateful to my friends in Calgary (Doug and Monica) who have allowed me to be a parasite on their Slingbox feed).
As a last resort, you may have to listen to the game on a radio station that broadcasts on
the Internet. As a Rider fan, my personal favorite is CKRM 620 in Regina. Click HERE to listen.If you have an iPad, iPhone, iPad Touch, or Blackberry, I highly recommend the Rider App. You can listen to the game
live, view rosters and stats, read articles, watch Twitter tweets, etc.As an aside, I have again this year been contacted by CBC Radio (Hi, Abby!) for information about being a Rider fan and watching the Grey Cup game in Costa Rica. Riders Win!
The teams are set for the Grey Cup championship game, next Sunday.
Montreal beat Toronto in a relatively boring game . . . but Saskatchewan beat Calgary in an fantastic game!
Now, in a repeat of last year’s Grey Cup game, Saskatchewan will meet Montreal in Edmonton.
But for a silly mistake at the end of last year’s game, Saskatchewan should have won. I hope they can achieve redemption on Sunday . . .
. . . however, Montreal looks tougher than ever . . . and the Riders have struggled somewhat coming down the stretch . . . but anything can happen in a single game.
One thing that the Riders have going for them is the weather . . . it will, no doubt, be freezing bloody cold in Edmonton. The Riders are used to playing in cold weather and snow. (It was about 25 degrees below zero in Calgary for today’s game!)

CALGARY — The Saskatchewan Roughriders rebounded from a slow start to beat the Calgary Stampeders 20-16 and advance to the 98th Grey Cup for a rematch with the Montreal Alouettes.
The Roughriders will now have a chance to avenge last year’s heartbreaking final play loss to the Alouettes.
Much like last week’s Semi-Final Saskatchewan got off to a sluggish start but were able to turn things around.Chris Getzlaf contiuned his excellent play against the Stampeders with eight catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in the win.
The Stampeders jumped out to an 11-0 first quarter lead to seize the early momentum on a chilly day in Calgary before the Riders rallied. Burke Dales opened the scoring on a 77-yard punt single and Rob Maver followed that up with a 15-yard field goal.
Henry Burris then connected with Arjei Franklin for the game’s first touchdown on a 22-yard pass play.
The Roughriders finally got their offence going in the second quarter as Darian Durant led the Riders on an eight play 80-yard drive capped by a Chris Getzlaf TD from Durant.
The Rider defence then stepped up with their biggest play of the game with less than a minute to play in the half as James Patrick intercepted Burris and returned the ball to the Stampeder 12-yard line.
The Roughriders capitalized on the turnover as Durant found Cary Koch in the endzone to give the Riders a 14-10 halftime lead.
The Stampeders regained the lead early in the third quarter thanks to another Dales single and Maver’s second field goal of the game.
The lead was shortlived though as Wes Cates plunged into the endzone from four yards out to give the Riders the advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Riders failed on the two-point convert though to make it a 20-15 Saskatchewan lead.
Dales then kicked his third rouge of the day to cut the Rider advantage to four.
The biggest play of the game may have came with less than three minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Ryan Grice-Mullen fumbled a Calgary punt and the ball was knocked into the Riders endzone. Jerrell Freeman recovered the ball in the endzone for a touchback though.
From there the Riders offence were able to run out the clock and make it back to the Grey Cup.

Fans of Canadian football were treated to two excellent games, yesterday!
Congratulations to the Toronto Argonauts and, of course, to THE SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS!
The Riders kept us on the edges of our seats, and at times looked like they might let the game slip away from them . . . but then they managed to pull out an exciting win in overtime.
Now, the Argos face the Montreal Alouettes, and the Riders go up against the Calgary Stampeders, this coming Sunday.
I can’t wait!
Can the Riders beat the Stamps and go on to win the Grey Cup (as they should have, last year)?
Have the Alouettes starters had too much rest to be prepared for the surging Argos?
Tune in on Sunday. It should be exciting!

The last games of the Canadian Football League’s regular season were played this past weekend.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (in a game that meant nothing to the team’s standings but a great deal to the morale of both the team and its fans) defeated the Edmonton Eskimos (31 to 23) dashing Eskimos slim playoff hopes (and even slimmer hopes of playing for the Cup before their home-town fans).
The Riders will now host the British Columbia Lions in the Semifinals on Sunday November 14.
I predict that the Riders will beat BC and move on to a repeat of last year’s Western Playoff Final against the Calgary Stampeders in Calgary. The Riders beat the Stamps last year . . . but are the underdog, this year. However, anything can happen in a single game . . . and I’ll be rooting for the Riders, of course.
In the East, the Toronto Argonauts spanked the league-leading (and, for many, a sure-bet to repeat as Grey Cup champions) Montreal Alouetttes. The lop-sided score (30-4) was not particularly surprising, as the Alouettes rested the majority of their starters – including star quarterback Anthony Calvillo – for the entire game.
The Argonauts will now face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, also on November 14. The winner of that game will go up against the Alouettes in the Eastern Final. The Ti-Cats and the Argos have identical regular season records (9 wins and 9 losses) . . . but, between the two, I think Toronto is probably the better team. I believe the outcome of the Toronto / Hamilton game will be a moot point, however, as I think the Alouettes will easily defeat which ever of those two teams moves on.
The Grey Cup Championship Game will be played in Edmonton on Sunday, November 28.
My best-case scenario would see Saskatchewan beating BC, and Hamilton beating Toronto. (Saskatchewan won both their regular season games against Hamilton, but split their two games against Toronto).
Then, if a miracle could happen, and Hamilton could knock off Montreal . . . and if Saskatchewan could beat Calgary (again, this year), the Grey Cup Final could be played between Hamilton and Saskatchewan, with Saskatchewan emerging victorious.
Returning to reality, however, if I were forced to place my money on a bet on the Championship, I’d have to say that I see Calgary playing Montreal, with Montreal winning again. (Sorry, rabid Rider fans . . . I know that is blasphemy; however, I’m just being honest).
Make no mistake . . . my heart is with the Riders all the way, and I’ll be watching all the games at the Monkey Bar (at the Flamingo Marina Resort) on my iPad linked to a Slingbox located in Calgary . . . sitting under the big green Saskatchewan Roughrider flag, autographed (“To our fans in Costa Rica”) by the dynamic duo of quarterback Darian Durant and receiver Andy Fantuz.

Okay, I’ve almost recovered from the dissapointment that was the outcome of the 2009 Grey Cup game . . . and what a game it was.
To have our beloved Riders lose the championship – in a game that they dominated until the end, . . . and to lose by one point . . . with no time on the clock . . . due to a silly mistake that resulted in a penalty (too many players on the field) which gave the Alouettes one final shot at a winning field goal . . . that was a giant heartbreaker!
However, Saskatchewan Roughrider fans, all over the world, are Roughrider fans whether their team wins or loses. And, Saskatchewan, has no problem playing the role of “next year country”.
Rider fans are amazing!The Roughriders are “Canada’s Team” and the fans are the “Rider Nation”. The Riders are not just a football team, they are a “religion” . . . a “cult”.
In Canada, no matter what city the Roughriders play in, there will be almost as many Rider fans as home team fans . . . and they’ll be crazier and louder than the home team crowd. Player Andy Fantuz has said that the Riders feel like they’re playing at home, even when they’re on the road . . . there are always so many Rider fans in the stands that the players feel that they play on either home fields or “neutral” fields . . . they never really feel like they’re playing an “away” game.
The unconditional love of the crazy Saskatchewan fans for their Roughriders has a psychological effect on the players that is one of the secrets to their success.. . . And Rider fans can be found all over the world . . . whether you’re in Afganistan, Holland or Costa Rica, if the Riders are playing, you’ll find Rider fans crowded around a television, radio, or Internet-connected computer.
Now, SaskTel and a Saskatoon-based company called zu have developed “the Rider App”, which is an application for Blackberry and iPhone/iPod Touch mobile devices that provides information about the Saskatchewan Roughriders including: game statistics and scores, complete team season statistics, season schedule, roster and player information, league results and standings, news articles and blogs, as well as official Rider twitter updates.
The Rider App, developed by SaskTel in partnership with Saskatoon-based zu, is a free download for
compatible mobile devices. Fans can download the Rider App for free by visiting www.riderville.com/page/riders-mobile. 
Get this! SaskTel, in a press release issued on November 20, 2009, entitled “Rider Pride running rampant around the world” reported that, in the first month after its release, the Rider App had been downloaded over 11,000 times in 64 countries! (That’s 1/3 of the world!) . . . and that was before the Riders won the Western Division Championship and before they were Grey Cup-bound. (I’d be interested to know how many times the App was downloaded before last Sunday’s big game).
Anyway . . . congratulations to the Alouettes for “stealing” the Grey Cup from us . . .
. . . and congratulations to the Riders on a great season and an exciting Grey Cup game.

THE HISTORY OF THE ROUGHRIDERS
Organized football in Saskatchewan began on Tuesday, September 13, 1910 with the formation of the Regina Rugby Club. The original idea was for the team to be a rowing club, but three-down football soon found its way to Saskatchewan. The original colours of the Regina Rugby Club were gold and purple. The team lost its first game 7-6 to Moose Jaw.The next season, the team changed its colours to blue and white to match the Regina Amateur Athletic Association. A third colour change occurred in 1912 when they changed to red and black, which they would keep for the next 36 years.
In 1924, the team changed its name from the Regina Rugby Club to the Regina Roughriders.Ottawa’s Rugby Club had been called the Rough Riders since the 1890′s, but dropped it in favor of the “Senators” in 1924. Regina jumped at the chance to adopt the name “Roughriders”.
There are two theories on where the name “Roughriders” came from. One states that it came from the North West Mounted Police who were called Roughriders because they broke the wild horse broncos used by the force. The other states there was a Canadian contingent who fought with Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt’s troops became known as the Roughriders. Following the war, the troops returned to Canada, part settling in Ottawa, and the rest moving out West. The colours of the Roosevelt infantry were red and black.
In 1921, East-West interlocking games began being played for the Canadian Championship symbolized by the Grey Cup.
Lacking suitable opposition in this province, in 1936, Regina banded with Winnipeg to form the Western Conference.
The year 1948 was a milestone one for the Roughriders. With the folding of both clubs in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon, the Regina Roughriders became a provincially-owned and -operated club, surviving only on the undying support from the entire province. They became the SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS”.
The team also changed its colours in 1948 to the familiar Green and White. The team was in bad need of new uniforms, and when executive member Jack Fyffe found a set of green and white jerseys at a surplus store in Chicago, for pure economic reasons, the 50 year legacy of the “Green and White” was born and has existed to this day.In 1956, the Roughriders suffered a terrible tragedy when players Gordon Sturtridge (#73), Mel Beckett (#40), Ray Syrnyk (#56) and Mario Demarco (#55) were killed in a plane crash while returning from an all-star game in Vancouver. Flight #810 crashed into Mt. Slesse in the Coastal Mountains just south of Chilliwack, B.C. The four players’ uniforms are among the eight Roughrider numbers retired by the club. Dave Ridgway (#36), Ron Lancaster (#23), George Reed (#34) and Roger Aldag (#44) are the others.
Ten years removed from the tragic accident, the Roughriders, with coach Eagle Keys at the helm, saw their first great achievement. By defeating the Ottawa Rough Riders 29-14 in Vancouver’s Empire Stadium on November 26th, 1966, Saskatchewan captured its first Grey Cup championship. Lancaster and Reed played key roles in leading the Riders to their first national title.
The Riders remained one of the best teams in the CFL for nearly 15 years, making the post-season every year from 1962 to 1976. Included in that span was five Grey Cup appearances, 1966 (which they won), 1967, ’69, ’72 and ’76
The Roughriders would update their look one more time in 1985, adding black and silver to the Green and White, and featuring a new stylized ‘S’ logo.
The team had several lean years during the late-‘70s and early 1980s, where poor on-field performances led to even worse gates. However, fans remained positive that a turn-around would soon come and it did, by way of one of the best Grey Cup games ever played.
On November 19, 1989, kicker Dave Ridgway nailed a 35-yard last minute field goal to seal the Roughriders’ second ever Grey Cup championship with a 43-40 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto’s SkyDome.
Canada’s Team has now made the playoffs six straight years, including four appearances in the Western Division Finals since 2003. The Riders reached the pinnacle of the CFL for the third time in the team’s history when they captured the Grey Cup in Toronto on November 25, 2007 after defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19.

I can’t believe it! I’m in a state of shock! Saskatchewan had the game “in the bag” right from the “get-go” and the celebrations had begun . . . but then suddenly . . . somehow . . . with no time left on the clock, the Alouettes were within field goal range trailing the Riders by only two points.
Hooray!!! The Montreal kicker misses the field goal and the Riders win! The Riders and their fans start jumping up and down! The Grey Cup is going back to Regina!
. . . BUT WAIT . . . there’s a flag on the play.
Saskatchewan is dinged for too many players on the field! Montreal gets another shot at the field goal . . . this time from closer range. And this time the ball sails right through the posts and . . . . THE ALOUETTES WIN BY ONE POINT! . . . after trailing for the entire game and with no time left on the clock!
I don’t freakin’ believe it!
I am presently in a state of denial . . . which will be followed by a indefinite period of mourning.
