To My Amazement

Playwright Chitra Sukhu, Director Paul Belanger, and New Age Productions are presenting the play “To My Amazement” at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, July 13 through 24, 2011, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The play presents the power of yoga that amalgamates the physical self with the conscious and reflects the human uniqueness – love and healing.
Those from the Tamarindo, Conchal, and Flamingo areas will recognize the names of the director and several of the actors from their work with Beachnuts Theatre Company. For example “To My Amazement” features Annika Almquist, who delighted audiences with her performances as Tinker Bell in “Peter Pan”, the Wicked Queen’s diminutive “secret service agent” in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and, of course, as Toto in the somewhat “off-beat” production of “The Wizard of Oz”.
Also from the Beachnuts troupe are Morgana Van Peebles and Simone Augustine. Morgana was outstanding as Snow White, and the two of them were evil and good witches, respectively, in “The Wizard of Oz”, eliciting loud “boos” and “cheers”, respectively, as they entered and exited the stage.
The cast of “To My Amazement” includes other “local” actors, including Brooklynne Belanger, Mary Augustine, Tatiana Ortiz, and Gayle Almquist. Original music for the production was provided by flautist Sara Gillis. (I learned today that either “flutist” or “flautist” are equally correct).
I must say that it is “to my amazement” that such a diverse group of people, of different ages and backgrounds, from Costa Rica, Arizona, the D.C. area, Hollywood, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and other places unknown, can somehow meet in Tamarindo, put together an outstanding play (I was invited to one of the rehearsals) and take their show on the road all the way from Costa Rica up to Canada!
